Thanks Ezra. That found the problem. Apparently I have somehow downgraded to 1.02.32 and the New Portal won't run on that. I will upgrade to 1.03.12 and try again and am sure it will be fine now. Thanks for everyone's help and sorry to be so dumb!!

Just out of interest, has anybody else had a problem trying to upgrade to 1.03.06? I've done upgrades before using the USB method, including the custom software, with no problems but I can't get it to load this time. I've done multiple downloads both with and without the revised custom software...

Just to add, I have a Panasonic with 3 HDMI ports. Port 1 is connected to a Sky box and auto switches when turned on, port 2 is connected to a Panasonic freeview PVR and also auto switches. My Hummy is connected to port 3 and that never switches so it looks like Panasonic sets auto switch ports...
