Thanks for all the help folks. When I finally got to my neighbour yesterday I discovered that his Humax was an 1800T but the particular file was SD and not HD so there was no encryption on the copy to a USB stick and the process was far easier than I had feared.

I now believe that my Humax was misbehaving. As part of my ferreting on the issue I did a retune and was amazed to find that I only had around 50 channels. Did a factory reset and I now have 165! More testing will be necessary to see if the reset has solved the failed recordings. I don't think...
