Looks like the HDD has had it then. I will look into the WD suggested. Thanks to all that have helped, but not to those who, bizarrely, see fit to post without adding anything useful.

Thanks. I downloaded Notepad ++, but cannot attach it. This is the full text: Jan 1 00:00:07 (none) user.info kernel: NET: Registered protocol family 16 Jan 1 00:00:07 (none) user.notice kernel: SCSI subsystem initialized Jan 1 00:00:07 (none) user.info kernel: usbcore: registered new...

    Diagnostics

Thanks, I've managed to do this and imported it into Excel. What I can't do is make any sense of it! The last few lines, for example: 05]: crond: USER root pid 1195 cmd /opt/bin/rs_process 2>> /opt/t mp/rs_process.log hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda...

    Diagnostics

I connected via Telnet and typed "touch /opt/etc/.SYSLOG_ENABLE" - I had assumed Telnet is the correct way to do this, but it didn't do anything as far as I can see. Then the box crashed again, showing a window saying the HDD needed reformatting. I disconnected the HDD power lead and, when...

Many thanks, this will keep me occupied for a bit.

    Diagnostics

Thanks. I will try and can check the HDD first. Not sure what the PSU is, but presumably if it or the regulator is shot, the box is not readily fixable. Also, I assume that disconnecting the HDD power requires the box to be opened up. I'm handy enough with a screwdriver and soldering iron, but...

    Diagnostics

Thanks guys. It's the original 320 GB as provided by Humax (8 years old now). I wouldn't know how to interpret the SMART info, or understand any files that the "touch /opt/etc/.SYSLOG_ENABLE" code might throw up. Willing to give it a go and post what comes up if someone is prepared to help...

    Diagnostics

Hi. Are there any diagnostic routines other than Fix-Disk that might sort a Foxsat HDR? Once a week it freezes, showing 'Custom FW' on the front panel. Power off and on cycle results in it reformating the HDD and wiping all my recordings. Fix-disk seems to go in a loop lasting about 1.5...

    Backing up HDD

Sorry, Thursday. Still no good to me at the moment.

    Backing up HDD

Well it's been recording OK, but every Tursday morning it ties itself in knots, resulting in it reformating the HDD and wiping all my recordings. Fix-disk does not help - it seems to go in a loop, stopping for a couple of hours showing the same lines (e.g. ... <inode #8364, mod time Sun Aug...

    Backing up HDD

So far it seems to have. If it records according to the schedule I will consider it fixed. If not, I'll have to think of a plan B

    Backing up HDD

As you say, it had crashed. It wouldn't respond to the standby button (or any others) on the remote or the front panel so I powered off using the rocker switch.

    Backing up HDD

It was stuck on one channel and not responding to any buttons. Powering off and on made no difference. It seems to be working now, I will just have to see if it records as scheduled. Previously it hadn't been reliably, which is why I started this thread.

Thanks, that seems to have sorted it.
