    Internal HDD Problem

If you are concerned about using RAID then you dont have to configure it. RAID isnt a substitute for backups either remember, everything on your NAS should be retrievable from backup thus bypassing any specifics of RAID/disk format.

Well I haven't looked into QNAP yet as the details are somewhat academic given that I cant afford one (!); however generally speaking you can format a NAS's hard drives with whatever format or RAID type you desire. There are I think four ways to arrange RAIDs. On my old ReadyNAS I went for the...

    Internal HDD Problem

I wouldn't be averse to the basic linux box approach, I just havent looked into it. As far as I know the QNAP is just a NAS and the files you store are on its discs are just mp4, avi, mkv, mp3 or whatever, so they're not proprietary. I dont see any hazard there wrt losing your content if the...

    Internal HDD Problem

A USB drive plugged into the pvr. Its a long story but in short my whole set up is way too messy. The cause mainly was that the (cheap) NAS that I chose (WD MyCloud) has never streamed properly to my telly in spite of spending days and days and days mucking about with it. MyCloud is not fit...

    Internal HDD Problem

NAS is creaking at the seams. I need to buy a newer and bigger one, but unfortunately I don't have the cash atm. Hey a Prisoner avatar, cool, I was a big fan back in the day.

    Internal HDD Problem

If I have 2TB I'll end up with more stuff than I am ever likely to have time to watch. 1TB helps keep me disciplined forcing me to regularly purge stuff that I don't really need, like if I haven't watched a programme in 6 months then it should probably be deleted. For stuff that I want to...

    Internal HDD Problem

Sorry I keep getting called away to other things, unfortunately fixing my PVR is low on the priorities atm. Anyway thanks for all the additional info everyone. So taking all into account I am now looking to buy a new drive. Having searched online it seems the most recommended for...

    Internal HDD Problem

Try telling that to an eight year old who has just lost twenty episodes of Charlie and Lola. Yes agreed Trev, I am very careful about backing up my PC, to the extent of even keeping a separate backup usb drive at a relative's house in case my own house burns down!

Ok. This is the mechanism I am aware of and what I was referring to by "survivable errors". What does fixdisk do to repair LBA 0? I did try to find info about fixdisk - is it the same as fsck on linux?

    Internal HDD Problem

My previous comment was aimed at Mike who gave no rationale for scrapping the disk. I know you said it was coming to end of life. I also know that two other people have said don't give up! So I am none the wiser. I am not complaining, I am grateful to people offering advice, but no-one has...

    Internal HDD Problem

I'll look into this - thanks for posting. Ok; its just that you don't seem to be taking into account that (a) hard drives can live with some types of error, and (b) one needs to be able to interpret the reports to be able to decide whether the errors one sees are survivable or not. I don't...

    Internal HDD Problem

Well yes, very droll. I like to work on evidence though Mike, and when I asked you what your rationale was for replacing it last week you didn't offer any, so I took it (rightly or wrongly) as a guess. But it does look like I've run out of options now as my humax is again telling me to format...

    Internal HDD Problem

Just got back onto this. I updated the CF to 3.13 and ran the fixdisk again. I didn't use the "-y" option on account of it looping previously, thought I'd run it without initially. I've copied the output below. It seems to have got a step further but then loops again. Any thoughts on what...

    Internal HDD Problem

Ok cheers. I'll follow MymsMan's advice re firmware update followed by fixdisk, then I'll report back. Thanks all for your input, much appreciated.
