  Yes it's possible and probably easier. Use the FTP server on the HDR (either vsftpd or tinyftp package) and something like filezilla on the PC. I've had speeds of around 7MBytes/sec (as reported by filezilla) for the HDR to PC transfer.

  I think it varies depending in the channel tuned to. If you check on say BBC1HD ( which I think is 7 seconds delayed) then switch to E4Extra (over 1m fast) the time jumps by 80 seconds. Plays a bit of havoc with timed recordings.
