I see it happening very occasionally; but not enough to worry me.
Try http://192.168.xxx.xxx:8080/page/index.html where 192.168.xxx.xxx is the full IP address of your Aura. You can also use DLNA if the TV supports it, if in Settings > Record and Share you scroll down and turn on the Network...
There is more than one factory reset options on the Aura; at least one of the options claims not to delete recordings. A cautious person would copy the important recording off by FTP before doing a reset.
The list of certified devices at https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/supported-devices/humax doesn't include the FVP-5000T but it does include the FVP-4000T which has very similar hardware to the FVP-5000T and runs the same software. Humax advertising at...
To me this sounds similar to a boot problem on the HDR-FOX T2 which was traced to a capacitor going out of spec. It is a long thread to read but a solution was found see https://hummy.tv/forum/threads/start-up-fails-when-hdd-connected.10164/
My advice would be to disconnect the hard drive and see if it boots.
IF it is a file system issue then it could be recovered by connecting it to a computer using Linux and using the file system repair tools.

In what way do you want to control the Aura? There is an app available for Android and Apple phones that allows you to view the programme guide and set recordings and a few other things.
It wasn't a standard Windows update but an update provided by CrowdStrike which I wouldn't expect to have any impact on the average home computer user.
As far as I know the firmware resides entirely in flash. I think you will find that you can install the standard firmware with the hard drive disconnected; I don't recollect actually doing it on an HDR-FOX T2 but I have certainly done it multiple times on earlier Humax models.
That is exactly how the standard firmware works as I understand it with all the software in flash RAM. The custom firmware must put some some software on the HDD because there is not enough storage on the motherboard.
