Help with dead recorder box
Brown gunk around electrolytic capacitors is definitely not good, it means they have spilt their corrosive insides over the circuit board. This requires some good scrubbing of the PCB after removing the relevant components and possibly also being prepared to replace some other nearby components...- antipodean

Does the BBC News at Six O'clock usually run over by more than two minutes!
I never found AR to be satisfactory, despite others saying they have no problems with it. So I record with 5 minutes padding each end, and for the case mentioned use BBC1 News HD, BBC South SD and One Show HD to get the overlaps. Then I'm not concerned if there is a couple of minutes overrun.- antipodean

RS Visual Schedule not updating
I have a problem with the RS Visual Schedule not updating. It is showing programs for today (Sunday) and the rest of the schedule is empty, while I know there are programs scheduled for the whole week. I had thought that it was a quirk of the daylight saving switch, but that has come and gone...- antipodean

My father used to get n Australian electronics magazine which had a section every month entitled "The Serviceman Who Tells". Jet Engines
I think that is why they need an auxillary source of moving air to get the engine rotating and create a draft before adding fuel and ignition source. The air pushing in the front then pushes the combustion products out the back, where the path is easier.- antipodean

Problem. Have an old faulty T2 with 2TB drive. Also have a new working T2 with no HDD
Yep, and the solution is to just delete the [deleted items] folder, and let it restart where it left off. You may need to do this several times (depending how much free space you have) before it has completely decrypted the drive.- antipodean

I'm also surprised by this outage, it seems that unwarranted trust has been placed in Crowdstrike - and it has come to bite all their customers in the tailend. I know the computer support group where I worked (a government laboratory) would check out all the updates before spreading them across...- antipodean

Yeah, the cellphone market (along with other miniature devices) has really pushed the sizing. You do have to be careful though, as the capacitance value derates the closer you get to maximum operating voltage. By the time max V is reached you can be at 1/3 to 1/4 rated C, especially for low...- antipodean

Actually you could using modern MCC capacitors. You can certainly get 4.7uF, but I'm not sure what voltage they go up to. But my memories of the photos of what needs changing I would expect to get one in there. But personally I would use a teardrop tantalum one, unless the circuit designer is...- antipodean

I wouldn't bet on getting a note as change. I've had them dish out a heap of small change (i.e. silver and coppers, not £1 & £2 coins) when a fiver would do.- antipodean
