But the portal is till not out for the HD FOX T2 yet either - why is it taking so long to remove the recording software from the firmware flash to make it run on the HD?
The only illegal thing is using the Windows HDF tool to remove the encryption of the hdf file. From that point on its fine.
My main concern is that Humax may end up being forced by other companies to increase the encryption of the file system in the HDF file to prevent us from doing this if...
@framedtoo - The reason i suggest going private for a while is mainly because there are major DRM issues at play here - i suspect the reason there is a key preventing us from falshing the box is because the BBC/SKY/ITV etc will not want a bunch of hackers taking their HD recordings off the box...
Hi guys - sorry i have been away for a while - but well done for getting so far.
I have just lifeted the lid on the box, and noted that there is in fact a com port (labeld UART 0) on the main board next to what appears to be a Zilog UART controller. I wonder if this has a getty running on it...
The fact that there is a chip to do harware decoding does not mean it has to be used! The CPU is not that bad, and could be made to decode other codecs via software as well. Its all about who has the time and resources to get into the box properly and have a look around the software in details...
A few points for discussion:-
1) The first thing to suggest here is not hacking the loader! This is the bit of the inbuild software that allows you to a) flash the box b) boot the thing in the first place and then start to load the main O/S - as long as this remains intact you SHOULD be able to...
Yes I did mean Codecs - it was my iphone doing some auto spelling for me.......
The codecs should be software based - nobody uses fixed hardware decoding for a long time as CPUs are now upto the task of doing video decoding without them (although many GPUs have routines in them to help out)...
Can anybody confirm if the new software has any more codes included in it? (I have a HD so cn't update yet) - If not Im going to get a popcorn hour until the new version is here, and then start hacking it.
Its not actually taking that long. As you would expect it streems the software out, and you box waits until the streem restarts before downloading it from the start.
its not an ondemand service as your box cant send a request back to the TV transmitted!
Windows 3.1 -> Minesweeper
DOS 6.22 -> Gorillers (via Qbasic) :)
being serious for a second its basicly to develope software and check for backwards compatablity and to check for file compatability/conversion when updated from older verisions etc.
The real problem coudl be that there is a major issue with the software......... Why else would it take this long to write what would seem like a reasonable simple bit of code that displays a web page, and then follows a link!
I wonder if this is a hardware problem for example it does not fit...
It should not be that difficult to add other codecs to the box as it basicly runs a modified version of linux, andthe codecs are publicly available to them. I suspect that the audio will be handled by the standard Linux audio system so installing audio codecs should be a relatively straight...
