  You could accept a larger HDD, and pre-format it to be only 1TB (or less). Make sure you format it MBR though.

  Only out by a factor of 1,000! Do they? So far as I know there is no limit on the number of times the magnetic domains can be flipped, so the rest is down to bearings etc.

  It's encrypted whether HiDef or StDef, but it doesn't matter what the key is so long as the same key is used for decryption as encryption! The "scrambled" message is what you get trying to play a recording with the wrong key.
