Because you are! Anyway, your position is nihilistic. "You won't achieve anything so don't try" is not the same as "I don't believe the outcome would be to anyone's advantage even if you succeeded".
Perhaps, but why are you so vociferous in advocating inaction? You might choose not to act yourself, but I see no purpose in persuading everyone else to be the same.
The same cynical argument could have been levied against stopping Hitler (and was). Unless people mobilise to voice their opinion, there is no chance of action. The People should and must, and when the numbers are overwhelming it would be foolish to ignore them.
If people are genuinely impacted by the run-down of BBC Red Button, they should complain and explain why. I know it's probably pissing in the wind, but the BBC is supposed to be audience-driven. Enough complaints, and they would have to listen.
Ditto receiver manufacturers: if enough people...
I can vouch for the effectiveness of tunefix and tunefix-update, the former for making any service:LCN assignment you want, and the latter for updating the tuning database without needing an actual retune.
Oh, inside. af123 identified a JTAG test point on the HDR-FOX PCB, but I don't think we've found anything else. We do, however, know of factory default IP addresses, and have surmised they used Ethernet for development, production, and test.

The HDR-FOX is a far better unit, and we have the custom firmware for it.
Does that mean it came ready installed with CF, or have you installed it since receiving it?
If already installed, I recommend you wipe it and start again, preferably with the latest 3.14.
See the links below (in my...
That's the installed firmware, nothing to do with the tuning. You will need to retune from time to time because the broadcasters keep shuffling services around.
I have discovered (in other completely different situations) people don't have an eye for detail. Ask them to put out some tables and chairs and they will be higgledy-piggledy, not tidy straight lines because they don't even notice.
Unfortunately we have to accept they're doing their best, and...
As above, please confirm the actual unit (HD-FOX vs HDR-FOX) so we can put this in the right category (presuming it's not already).
Not necessarily, the station displayed merely indicates what it was tuned to last. I take it your son lives in the London area – where do you live?
If it were...
