I certainly had no problem downloading and installing VLC using the Aura.
Correct. I am not aware of a way to transfer recordings onto the Aura hard drive but there may be a way that I haven't found.
Plug in a USB hard drive or memory stick with recordings on, install VLC on the Aura and that will play the recordings provided you have removed the encryption.
I thought it was an interesting problem because it appears that the Humax loses all signal when his transmitter is in use but another TV at the property continues to behave as normal. What is it about the Humax that it makes it more susceptible to the radio transmission?
I find that a very odd attitude. The purpose of the forums is to try and help people. I thought there were some people here (such as Rodders53) who knew a lot more about radio and TV transmission and pointing somebody to a different forum is something I do quite a lot. Why do you consider it...
Try this guide for the basics (NB written for the HDR-FOX T2 so the screen you will see at the end is different on a FOXSAT) : https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Telnet
That is precisely what I did and why I have always thought the SD recordings were not encrypted but Black Hole did not consider that sufficient proof. I have been meaning to take the hard drive out of mine to get that proof but somebody else has done it for me.
It isn't true that SD being unecrypted is usual for Humax. The previous Humax Freeview HD recorders (HDR-FOX T2, HDR-2000T, HDR-1800T, FVP-4000t and FVP-5000T) all had SD content encrypted. I believe that some of the Freesat and Youview boxes don't encrypt SD.
If you have time, could you try copying an SD recording from the drive and see if plays on another device eg a PC using VLC or your player of choice. It would be nice to find out if the SD recordings really are stored unencrypted on the Aura.
I don't have experience with Mint but it is Debian based and I was very pleasantly surprised how easy it was to upgrade from Debian 10 to Debian 11 which reminds me I need to start thinking about upgrading to Debian 12. I think you would need to go 19 to 20 and then 20 to 21.
Two thoughts:
Perhaps try a better screened aerial cable eg https://www.aerialsandtv.com/product/coax-2m-quality-fly-lead
Looking at the picture there appears to be a blanking plate in the left hand position of the faceplate; is it feasible to rearrange things to switch the aerial socket and...
I think support for SMB1 is still available on recent versions of Debian but it is not active by default.
Try editing smb.conf to add
client min protocol = NT1
