... and following that recipe and adding the WebIf resulted in fixdisk being happy as Larry :)
Many thanks!
It does make me wonder how the on screen menu format made a horlicks of it though
Many thanks for all that - nice to know it is not just me ;-)
I've stopped the fixdisk and will use your spell - if, as I suspect, these are soft (file system structure errors) rather than hard (media problems), there's not much point in continuing the run.
I had to umount the volumes 1st

formatted using the Hummy standard system menu (obviously prior to installing the custom FW)
ta, sort of what I thought/hoped but considering how few operations there had been, I was mightily surprised
Is this to be expected - it sounds wrong to me but maybe it is ok.
Whizzing by too fast ATM to be specific but I can see "Illegal blocks"
Can post the log if wanted when done but it is the general Q I am asking ATM

where poss, I'd like to make any mods local if poss (for my own benefit) and echo to the RS if reqd. Partly because I haven't yet tasted the RS and partly it is not always available - us wot live in the sticks often lose power and connectivity (power cover is easy; have lots of UPS, connectivity...

a bit of research indicates that it is in the data stream (sorry Black Hole!) but it is done as a sort of timed overlay using the old teletext system. There is some sort of time base and the overlays are shown relative to that. So it is the timebase that must be varying - which was my suspicion...
as I said I want to investigate it. It is not cut and dried by any means where the problem lies.
If it were simply embedded in the data stream at the relevant points then when the STs rush ahead of themselves, stopping playback and restarting wouldn't restore the positional accuracy (sometimes...
thanks for that all, will digest.
wrt subtitles. I'm unconvinced it is purely down to bought in components. With some channels it is rock solid (and seems to be better on HD channels). I wonder if there are various modes to the actual data and if so whether it can be cured/improved by...
I'm a long time user of the customised SW and there are a few improvements that would make my life easier (not a criticism of the current CF, just potential improvements). I'm happy to get my hands dirty if anyone can provide pointers in the right direction.

Wow - didn't expect that much response so quickly. Many thanks!
As a wise man once said "You have 2 ears and one mouth so you should listen twice as much as you speak" ;-) I certainly didn't take offence although it is an interesting view (not challenging it) that readers of a forum should join...
