CI Module

Black Hole

May contain traces of nut
Is anyone aware of any services which require a conditional access module? The HDR-FOX has a vacant slot for one, and I've been looking at the manual for a PVR-9150T and that has one too. Apparently it's an adapter into which a card like a SIM or an SD gets inserted.

Why it's called "CI" when it's "conditional access" is another mystery.

Oh, I see. Humax conflated "Common Interface" and "Conditional Access Module" to come up with "CI Module". Typical!

Years ago before I had Humax PVRs I had one if those half-moon Pace thingies. You could put in a card very similar to a bank card with the gold coloured contacts. I did have Top Up TV for a while before they changed the broadcasting model.
BH’s understanding seems to be correct. My 9150 has a slot where the CI module can be added. Presumably your card then fitted into that. There is no obvious way to perform the same function with newer models unless there are USB CI modules - and the firmware can cope with it. (Of some interest if the BBC went subscription only)
