Copy of old "mod" directory to new disk fails - permissions

Moving to a new disk
Step 1 copy all files (inc those hidden) to a random new folder on my linux PC. All files copied except>>
Using file copy (Linux Fedora), all files except for the "mod" system folder can be copied: error message is Permission denied.
Question: how do I get round this ??

Step 2 is intended to be: mount and format the new disk (no spare slots to mount both old and new at same time)
Step 3 copy all files to the new disk

The blocked files appear to require root privilege.
I could (i assume) use chown to allow my access to them?? Is that the way to go or will I get problems of some sort??

Apologies this should be in the general HDR-fox-t2 forum and not the firmware one. Can admin please move it

All operations on the Humax are carried out with root privilege. There is no harm in you invoking super-user status on your Linux installation and doing everything from that.

I disagree - this is hardly normal user stuff.
