Custom Firmware Weirdness. Absolutely stumped.

The HDRs aren't intended for long-term storage, and as the OP's was come by cheap, shouldn't be relied on for such.
In his position, I'd leave the 500GB drive installed, package a suitable 1TB drive in a USB enclosure and attach externally to supplement the storage/archive programmes in a way they can be viewed elsehow should the HDR fail.
 
This does raise a concern. The original drives in my Humax will eventually die (possibly before the PSU or other parts) at that point I planned to put in a "bigger disk" has "technology" and "the market" now moved on, such that it will get increasingly hard to find suitable disks ? ...If so, maybe I should buy a couple now and use use them for archival storage until they day they're need ...so the question is "what is that drive?"
