Do I need WebIf to benefit from CF?

I’m looking to install a couple of CF when my newly acquired HDR-Fox T2 arrives.

It is not convenient to connect the box to my network.

Can I install a bundle directly from USB without first installing WebIf?

My 2 must haves would be auto store of schedules (for recovery after a channel update scan), and bookmarks for adverts so they can be easily skipped.

Will these work without the need for WebIf? As I understand things, the menus on the box are not modified/appended when a CF is applied, so adjusting CF settings will not be possible on the box itself.

So, for instance, if I wanted to choose between bookmarking ads and automatically deleting them, would selection of these options be only available via the WebIf? Likewise, changes to any optional settings related to saving my schedule.

Could someone please clarify.

Many thanks

Dave

All of those things are configured via the WebIF or, if you prefer, could be configured by editing files via the Telnet interface. Both require a network connection. Also, I'm not completely clear how you install packages other than a network connection.

That said, if you connect the network once to set it all up and configure it, I could imagine the two examples you give working. I think schedule restore is automatic after a retune (if you have the package installed and configured); If you decide once and for all what you want doing about adverts (bookmark versus cutting) then it will just get on with it.

As ever if anyone knows better please feel free to correct me.
What's the difficulty with connecting a network?

Thanks for your reply. I believe packages can be added after first downloading to a USB stick.

No router nearby and no spare power sockets to add an access point. I guess I could look to temporarily run a long network cable for configuration purposes if necessary.

It is possible to use USB "bundles", but inconvenient. Do the long wire thing.

There are alternatives to a long wire, see:

Note that there are HomePlug adapters with pass-through mains, so they only require the same power point that runs the unit. There are access points that are USB powered and could therefore run from the HDR-FOX, or a WiFi dongle works too.

Installing the DetectAds package does not activate it, you need to have the webif to configure it.
The settings are held in an sqlite table so it is not trivial to modify them without the webif.
