Noisey in Standby mode

Hi

I've just bought a Humax Aura. I was told by Humax techies that in stand by mode ( when red light is on), the box should be silent. But it is just as noisy as when it is on (when blue light is on). I don't want a noisy box all the time, I bought this box for the reason it would be quiet in standby by mode. The techies said do a factory reset, made no difference and then erase and format HDD. This made no difference either. My questions:

Have I got a faulty box, and if I replace with a new one, will this stop happening?

Or do they all do this. In which case how do I make it quiet in standby by mode. Or is the only way to cut power when I am not recording?

Any non techie replies or solutions appreciated. Thanks!

It contains a hard disk drive. When the drive is spinning, there will be a little noise, and it will be amplified if you stand the unit on a resonant surface, such as a shelf. You should find the noise greatly diminished if you stand the unit on a cloth. There may also be a fan.

However, in standby I would expect the drive/fan to spin down if you leave it long enough to complete its shutdown cycle. Not that I have an Aura, just guessing.

I'll try these suggestions, thanks.

My Aura is silent in standby (note that my hearing isn't great) but it does take several minutes to become silent.

My Aura is fairly quiet when on, and silent in standby (and my hearing is reasonable). Definitely follow BH's suggestion about where you place the Aura. Based on my experience with other plastic cased Humaxes this can make a great difference. However, unless you are recording, the Aura shouldn't be noisy in standby.

Like others have said, does it take a while to go quiet in standby or is it instant?
It won't be instant. If the Aura is anything like a HDR-FOX (and it is a Humax PVR, after all), there is a (sometimes lengthy) series of housekeeping operations to perform during shutdown. Go away for an hour (safe margin) and see if it's still whirring then – only if so is it worth considering further action.

I would say it is substantially slower to shutdown than an HDR-FOX T2, I will try to measure it next time I finish using the PVR. The other thing the OP could try is to use deep standby (long press of the power button); personally I wouldn't recommend it as it makes the box slower to start and I have seen reports from some people who do use it of more failed recordings.
