Problem Getting HDD Recognised for CF Install on HD-FOX

Black Hole

May contain traces of nut
I'm trying to support another user with this and I'm baffled.

Scenario:

Buffalo 500GB USB portable drive;
Clean format to FAT32 via HP USB drive format utility on Windows PC, file explorer shows ~500GB free;
Connect to HD-FOX, format OK, reports ~465GB free, set as recording drive OK, seems to record OK;
CF 3.13 installed on HD-FOX;
Access the default web page at the IP address and get the "To install... suitably formatted disk... none was detected"
Everything looks like it should be absolutely fine to me, so what do I do now??

Too late now, but I shall know to look another time.

As it happens, after another reboot, everything seemed to proceed normally - I just hope it stays that way. It wasn't that the disk was slow to start up either.
