Problem with recordings

Had a problem last night with some recordings. the two later recordings were supposed to stop at 22:00, but I noticed that the T2 was still recording two programmes at about 23:00 (purple redring) so stopped the recordings.

I Recorded:
19:00, BBC2 HD, Celebrity Antiques Road Trip
20:00, CH5 SD, GPs Behind Closed Doors
21:00, CH5 SD, Can't Pay? We'll Take it Away
21:00, BBC1 HD, The Apprentice

Celebrity Antiques Road Trip and GPs Behind Closed Doors both recorded OK, Right size/duration

Can't Pay? We'll Take it Away failed to record properly Started OK but recording shows a length of 20 mins and a size of 2.47 GiB (a bit on the large size for an hour of SD recording)
Similarly, The Apprentice failed to record properly Started OK but again recording shows a length of 20 mins and a size of 4.79 GiB (a bit on the large size for an hour of HD recording)

I checked out The Apprentice on fast forward. The timeline (at the bottom of the screen) soon hit the end, but the recoding carried on past the end of The Apprentice, so it's all there. (I don't know how far past the end). I haven't checked out Can't Pay yet.

After playing around, I put the box into S/B (redring went red). This morning the redring was dim blue and the box came on instantly on ITV (My POC channel is BBC1 HD)

Not sure if this is related, last two days on HDR1000S, I have consecutive recordings from BBC1 HD of Doctors, The Coroner and Escape To the Country. On both days all three recorded OK except that Doctors carried on recording for two hours, thus recording The Coroner and Escape To the Country twice. It's looking like the BBC are having issues with indicating when Doctors has completed. Seems there are similar issues with The Apprentice. I have replaced the Doctors series recording to see what happens today.

I had no other recordings at the time so the two tuners presumably required to achieve this were free.

That's interesting, because the HDR-FOX will not record two instances of the same service simultaneously under any circumstances - not even record a programme and save to the TSR buffer at the same time.

As I understood it, the "end flag" for a programme is actually the "start flag" for the next - ie when the transmitted CRID changes. I also understood that the transmission of the CRID is not necessarily continuous, resulting in problems if a recorder happens to miss the moment when it was actually transmitted.

If this understanding is correct, I can see no circumstances under which the recording of programme A could fail to terminate and yet the recording of programme B begins at the correct time (A and B being consecutive programmes on the same service, and assuming use of AR).

I thought the freetime boxes were the same, as the two recordings were from the same transponder it is possible that only 1 tuner was used in any case as there is definitely a limit of two max irrespective of number of tuners used. And yes AR and series were used.

Confirming it did do just that, presumably you could not set it up to do that deliberately (except possibly by using a manual recording). Two days in a row, One recording had Doctors, The Coroner and Escape To The Country, in addition there were separate recordings of the latter two programmes. Awaiting to see what happens today.

Trev - re. the recordings that are longer than they appear, use the sidecar package and select the update hmt file option. This will update the programme length in the hmt file based on the actual length of the ts file.

There are 6 types of Event Information Tables [EITs] in the broadcast stream. Four of them are general EPG data, two for the MUX that transports them and two covering other MUXs in the same region.

The other two table types contain Now/Next data and again there is one for the local MUX and one for other MUXs.

AR uses the Now/Next local MUX table which consists of a number of entries (usually two).
For a random recording on my box, this is the contents of this table during the recording.

running_status is a number between 0 and 5 according to the spec (I don't know which ones are used in the field).

0 - Unknown
1 - Not running
3- About to start
3- Pausing
4 - Running
5- Off-air

So in this case event 47451 is on now (status 4) and 46886 isn't (status 1).

I've seen cases where more than one programme has status 4 at the same time and that could be what has happened here.

It would be possible to analyse the .ts file (assuming it is decrypted and not shrunk) but probably not worth the effort : )

Thanks MET. The recordings are actually longer than the Media list implies. Both being recorded from 21:00 and should have finished at 22:00, but they both show 20mins in the media list etc. On the 'Can't Pay...' file, I did the sidecar thing and it gave a new length of 2:07:00, which is about what I thought it was recording for. On the 'Apprentice' the Opt+ 'Sidecar Files' option is greyed out, but it is in the Deleted Items folder if it makes any difference.

Two days in a row, One recording had Doctors, The Coroner and Escape To The Country, in addition there were separate recordings of the latter two programmes. Awaiting to see what happens today.

Maybe, under similar circumstance, the HDR-FOX might do the same.

Thanks for that - so basically my understanding was too simplistic, and there is actually a kind of state machine tracking progress of multiple events.

The event table doesn't seem to include a reference to the CRID - is that right?

Yes. The CRID is associated to the event_id by the Content Identifier Descriptor (CID) - see TS 102 323 and EN 300 468 if you're brave enough!
