Replacing drive with a 2Tb option

My Humax internal drive has given up and I'm going to buy a new 2Tb one. Thanks to people on here, there is plenty of information on what ones to buy and how to replace it.

When I look at Humax's for sale, none of the used ones say 2Tb.

So just wondering if the 2Tb option has any problems so people don't replace the original drive with a 2Tb one? Or might be just that people are so happy with it that they don't sell it.

I think that the people who are selling them do not appreciate the nuances and advantages of the T2 and go out and buy a box with (allegedly) more bells and whistles and then quite a few realise their mistake when the can't get the box to do what they want it to.
There are loads of posts around the various AV forums that ask how do you do something or other and the answer is invariably "You can't".

I replaced my failing 1TB drive with a 2TB drive (Seagate ST2000VM003) more than three years ago and so far it has done 22,700 power on hours with zero problems. I suspect the later Seagate hard drives are more reliable than those originally fitted to the HDR-FOX T2.

I don't understand why you are surprised at this. Despite the apparently large number of members on this forum, the vast majority of HDR-FOXes were purchased by ordinary consumers completely unaware of and with no interest in the goings on here. A few of those consumers use something until it breaks, some use it until something "better" comes along seduced by Freeview Play or whatever, some routinely replace things because they like something new on a regular basis. Most of the replaced items will go to the tip whether they're broken or not. Just a few will get offered on eBay (if the owner is young enough to know how to do it).

None of them will have a 2TB HDD, because that's not how they came out of the shop, and anyone who is sufficiently interested to have bothered fitting a larger HDD (even I haven't bothered with that - I have three 500GB HDRs running instead) won't be getting rid any time soon.

Geordie - snap. My 1TB has got poorly of recent. The custom software had been sending me warnings of recent, thanks to Af123 skills. When I ran the fix utility yesterday it generated loads of errors, ran for 10 hours or so with me typing Y fix it, many, many times, then announced terminated with a status error 1. A number of block couldn't be recovered. Rebooting via the telnet software it shows and plays the files but won't record. It appears a normal reboot looses the drive but in via the custom web software, moans and reboot I see the drive again. Currently copying it out to a 1tb usb I had spare.

Now my understanding is the 1.03.xx software will now format 2tb disks without doing anything clever. I think I'm going to settle for the Seagate Pipeline HD 2TB Drive (ST2000VM002/3) from this link

https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/2TB_Disk_Installation_Blog

Would it be true to say experts that the format of this drive with 1.03.xx is just pressing go rather than aligning as the text describes ?. The linked text says the note was done prior to 1.03.xx With this edited in and that people have had success with the 1.03.xx release.

I may have missed more recent reports.

Then this one looks easy enough

In the mean time I'm copying off the contents of the 1tb drive before ordering a replacement just in case it totally fails. I'm sure the learned people on here know what's going on. I think it's got a screwed up index.

Think I'll settle for a 4tb as per those instructions....

Feel free to comment with recommendations but I think I'll copy the stuff out quick rather than do more diagnosis and fixing. I got tired of tapping Y from 3pm to 1am last night.

Yes; although there are advantages to the parameters af123 has chosen for the file system in his blog(e.g. significantly fewer inodes that the standard Humax format so faster fix-disk runs).

I'm edging towards the 4tb solution with the ST4000VM000 following the Very Large Hard Drive link above. The copy out to the external drive is still going. I want to find the menu options as documented before I order the drive but I'm not going to touch whilst it's copying out.

No flaw in my logic that I can't copy back on the contents ?.

The menu options are simple. You will need recent / the latest Custom firmware.
Physically replace the disk. The hardest part of the process. As always, best to earth yourself and be gentle. See https://hummy.tv/forum/threads/how-do-i-replace-internal-hard-drive.7139/
Telnet to the machine. At the menu type "maint", the machine should reboot into maintenance mode. See https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Maintenance_Mode.
Telnet to the machine again. At the menu type "gptf", the machine should automatically partition and format the disk. No messing about with exotic commands and options. See https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Very_Large_Hard_Drive
I would expect the gptf option to work on smaller disks too if you want to practice before opening up the machine.
Reformatting the disk might even return it to full usability, but I would check it with smartctl from the command line. See https://hummy.tv/forum/threads/hard-disk-failure.6680/
There is a vast amount of information in this forum. Almost every question one might ask has been answered. As well as the built in search, I find Google searches starting "site:hummy.tv " useful.

Thanks aw1. It was going well with the copy out but stopped after Death in Paradise... fittingly. Im doing another fix disk on the offchance I can continue with the copy out.

It's running a short disk self check from 60 or so... yesterday from +13,000 which took an eternity with many restarts from the top in the counter. Not sure why it opted for the short self test. I might have a long night but shorter of pressing Y.

Spoke too soon... decided a long test is required. LBA has not been found. Now asking all those questions again.

Do I know what's going on, no. Did a lot of short tests which it succeeded on.

Thanks for your advice, I'll go for the 4tb.

I reckon I'll be at this one in the morning but we'll see

https://hummy.tv/forum/threads/fix-disk-error-pending-sectors-but-lba-not-found.4882/

I might have to be happy with all recording up to D following the instructions if I can't get the disk readable again. Reckon I watched the news which made it try to record it whilst the rest of the copy was on channel 250, no data.

Ah. A missing LBA is quite a severe problem.
If you can identify it, you could try skipping the current file to see if later ones work.
Or just shrug and copy a well established member here by saying "It is only telly".

A somewhat apt badge legend from long ago - "On a clear disk you can seek forever." http://www.computerhistory.org/collections/catalog/E1253 Seems to have been a fortune cookie too. Digging a bit more, may be a reference to what happened when you booted an Apple ][ from an unformatted floppy. https://everything2.com/title/on+a+clear+disk%2C+you+can+seek+forever

Bulk copies sometimes stop for no apparent reason. It may carry on if you simply reselect the material that has not been copied and retry.

IIRC, the fixdisk utility has a switch whereby you don't have to keep answering "Yes", but c an't remember what it is. Try a search for it.

This is exactly why the help needs to be built in. But we've been there before...

Thanks all and Af123. I had another manual run today ended up still not seeing the disk. Had a read around the board I suspect Im stuffed. So the drive came back the first time after a few reboots but stopped about 20 percent through the copy. Now not seeing the drive inviting to reformat... although when it first did this it changed its mind and let me in subsequently. Resisting that now.

I'll do the -y overnight.

I'll go the

Just get on and format it, then run fixdisk. You very likely will not watch all the that you have recorded.;) It's only Telly.:roflmao:
