True and it will let you know if the fan really does fail !

I had installed both tempmon and sysmon.

Not sure I agree - that assumes that the fan continues to work.

Anyway - I did have the Fan package installed, but hadn't configured it at that point. When I saw the temp alert, I set it to 50% just to see if it would force the fan to work, and despite leaving it to take effect for 10 mins, the fan stubbornly refused to run. Not wanting to cook the new HDD, I just re-installed the bodge from my old hummy.
