TS files and application/x-vlc-plugin not supported

This issue is not limited to the customised firmware. I noticed that the function to play TS files in the webif uses the type application/x-vlc-plugin and it isn't supported in Chrome or Edge.

Does anyone know the history of this issue and what the fix is?
