It works fine with the stock firmware, or at least until I power the unit down for 5 minutes and power it back on again.

I did that though - I used a partition manager to set the drive as "Unformatted" and it was detected as such by the stock firmware and formatted properly. When I powered the box down for just over 5 minutes, I powered it back on and the drive was subsequently not detected by the box.
