lost all my recordings - help!

Does the Foxsat HDR use ext3 on its internal drive? If it does there are utilities you can download to attempt file recovery (don't rate your chances of 'unformating') on a computer. As BH says, though, expect to spend lots of time for few results. The bigger the files the more fragments you'll...

    USB not recognised

Sorry, I don't see where you're going with that one. We were talking about a drive currently with some FAT based system on it, no? You seem very negative towards somebody who's basically agreeing with you.

    USB not recognised

Actually a format, of either type, sets up the on disk structure and writes out new tables and bitmaps (as required) for the partition with no regard for what is or isn't already on the media - it works just the same for a completely zero filled partition as a partition containing all the...

    USB not recognised

I think Luke (and BH) has made the best suggestion for you already - try NTFS. It's easy to set up from native MSWin, it's usable on many systems, and you'll most likely chuck it away as too small before it's even half worn out. Yes, you can copy recordings off to the external drive. You can...

    USB not recognised

I think the keys here are 64gb, "converted to FAT", PC (likely implying Windows) In the last several versions of Windows you can't format anything above 32gb as FAT32 (which is what you need here) with the standard tools, the convert/format would have produced a propriatey exFAT filesystem...

Backing up HDR-FOX T2 to an external HDD via USB

Is it a portable 2.5" drive in a silver metalic case? The second usb plug is power only (no data lines connected) and meant for distributing the load across 2 usb sockets to bring the current usage within spec. For the most part it's redundant.

Instant recording - programme end clipped

Once it's finished copying from the buffer it's the same thing. You can press the record button on the channel being instant recorded at any time and increase or decrease the end time in 10min blocks with right/left key presses. I've never tried pressing the record button again while the copy...

    USB dongles

Have you checked if there is anything else in range using the same wifi channel? A nearby router on the same channel can cause this effect. I've also had problems with a few 'g' devices on a 'n' enabled network - they would connect and opperate for a moment then completely lose the signal in a...

    Shower or bath?

Given the choice I'd have a bath every time, although time usually dictates otherwise. I'd say for our household that a shower is good for a quick rinse but for a propper wash there's not going to be much cost saving to be had (long showers). Did an evening course a few years ago with sombody...

    Recommendations for a NAS...

Many drives have a small ramp at the edge of the platters for the heads to go up - this provides a safe position when off-line and also allows for a lower power idle state (the heads increase the drag on the spinning platters a bit) load-unload relates to this.

    Recommendations for a NAS...

It turns out that my memory is out of date  The figure I stated was the old rule of thumb. Done some reading and - modern drives can have a start-stop cycle rating (typically) from 5,000 to 50,000 with most consumer grade drives being in the region of 20k-50k. So that mostly moots my...

    Recommendations for a NAS...

I picked up a HP Prolient Microserver last year when they were doing the big cashback offer. Fitted 2 3tb Reds in raid1 (Linux software raid) with an internal flash drive for boot and have it starting with WOL and shutting down from a cron job - just timed at the moment but planning to make it...

Anyone know what this icon means?

I've had that icon pop up on quite a few encrypted copies. I can't say if there is any restrictive effect as I've only watched and deleted from the external drive at a latet date. I'm running quite an old stock firmware (pre the auto retune issue). Never seen it on a bbc recording but...
