Well the manufacture date of the two boxes was over a year apart. Maybe some of the components inside have changed/different supplier? The HDMI connection works ok when the PVR is not recording. I have to manually select it with the Sony kit but the picture displays ok/PVR behaves normally.

Well considering my "refurbished" box was full of someone elses recordings and already tuned in it would seem that Humax can't even be bothered to do a factory reset or hard drive format on them. Not to mention the filthy remote control!

Well John Lewis technical support on the phone said it would have to be sent away (turn around time about 10-14 days) but when I took it to the Cheadle branch they swapped it immediately. It might be a different matter if they didn't have a spare refurbished one in stock. I am a bit suspicious...

No worries. Will do once I have confirmed return arrangements with John Lewis/Humax. I am going to try and push them for a full refund so I can re-buy one from them with another full 2 year guarantee!

That settles it for me then. Fix-disk and reformatting hasn't worked. Its warranty return to John Lewis! Thank you to everyone for your help.

I was just wondering when you get the message "channel is scrambled or not available" during a playback of a recording, is that message part of the recording or generated by the box when the playback glitches so much that it cant display it properly? If so, it might explain why I keep getting...

Ah ok Ezra. I didn't know it if it was custom firmware related or not (still don't know) when I posted it. Feel free to move it the other forum if you think it it appropriate.

I've been through a prolonged fix-disk and bad sector reallocating exercise already, as detailed in the previous posts on this thread but it hasn't improved anything.

I read about similar glitches people were having and removing the custom firmware resolved it (there is a post somewhere in the custom firmware forum). So, just to be sure I have now removed all custom firmware, factory reset, hard drive format. I will see how it runs now when recording HD over...
