Long-term hardware reliability of the HDR-Fox?
As per the title, I'm wondering if we have any sense yet of what the long-term reliability of the 'Fox hardware is likely to be. Is it reasonable to suppose my box will still be working in 5 years' time - or even 10? Is there some part of the hardware that seems prone to early failure? I don't...- TonyC

FTP, DLNA and Samba: which works best for which applications?
I recently installed Samba on my 'Fox and started wondering about the different file transfer protocols available. For transferring files from the 'Fox to a PC, I can use FTP, or Samba with Windows Explorer. They both seem to work equally well. Do either of them have any particular advantages /...- TonyC

Just to update this old thread, in case anybody else has the same issue: I recently got a new TV, and the original problem (that the NAS -> TV DLNA streaming was unreliable with Content Share on) has gone away.- TonyC

I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for in auto.log, but nothing stands out as an error-type message. I can see a lot of lines like "Flatten failed to remove directory", I presume because I have dozens of folders all marked as "noflatten" There are some other sets of lines like "SHRINK...- TonyC

That's exactly what I have done. And it clearly is basically working, because the 'Fox doesn't appear on the TV's list of possible DLNA servers. And yet it is absolutely consistent that turning Content Share on disrupts NAS -> TV streaming.- TonyC

HDR-Fox T2 occasionally freezes - mains disconnect necessary.
My old Toppy would often crash when weather conditions meant particularly poor signal quality. Presumably some data packet was received that, due to interference, contained a very specific pattern that triggered some kind of overflow error or whatever. You'd like to hope that designers of...- TonyC

Ah, I hadn't thought of that. I don't actually want to Share Content, I just want auto-decrypt to work. So a permanent firewall rule that made the 'Fox entirely invisible to both the TV and the NAS, in either direction, would be fine. Is some kind person able to advise the necessary mystic...- TonyC

As usual, apologies if this has been discussed before; a search didn't show anything. I've a Fox T2 running CF. About half the things it records get FTPed off, edited and put onto my NAS (running Twonky v7) for convenience and to save disk space. To do this, I have to have Content Share on...- TonyC

Scheduling problem
I'm guessing it's related to this problem: http://hummy.tv/forum/threads/setting-a-recording-that-wont-get-rescheduled.6238/ It's possible that the 'Fox would have, come 9pm, realised that there was a clash and rescheduled the BBC4 recording for 1.30 - but I wouldn't count on it.- TonyC

Setting a recording that won't get rescheduled?
(I suspect I meant PID, not CRID, by the way - all these recordings were one-off settings not series repeats, but I presume the same philosophy applies) So the time and date set in the timer is more or less an irrelevance and the 'Fox will always attempt to record the first instance of that...- TonyC

I've been having problems recently with the scheduling of various recording via Remote Scheduling, but I think it applies equally to recordings set directly through the Web interface and probably even the SUI. Yes, that's what I assumed. But it definitely isn't the case; I have checked again this morning and the Humax can see the NAS fine. I wonder if it is significant, that I have changed the IP address of both the NAS and the Humax since installing dlna-filter? I have left the IP list in...- TonyC

HDMI / HDCP problems - helped by a cold boot?
6 months on, an update to this. I rearranged my AV equipment so I could get to the power switch at the back of the Humax, so next time this happened, I could do a "cold boot" without having to pull the extension lead for all the kit. And it didn't help - I still got the "no signal" error. I had...- TonyC

According to http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/control , "control" has been used as a noun since 1590. I take your point (in the other thread) about verbs that have recently become nouns, but to protest about a change that happened over 400 years ago is, IMHO, taking "traditionalism" too...- TonyC

Here the dictionary is of little help. The OED defines "control" as "A switch or other device by which a device or vehicle is regulated". I would argue that the object we are discussing is a device, singular, but since it is a collection of switches you could also consider it as a plural...- TonyC

Yes, but not all modifying words are adjectives. Think of "telephone directory". "Telephone" is a "qualifying word" in this case, describing a property of the "directory" - but "telephone" is clearly not an adjective, and it is perfectly reasonable to use "telephone" as a noun in its own right.- TonyC
