So all that time my Portal’s been working perfectly, I took it for granted and never realised how well off I was.
I remember your telling me during previous troubleshooting how sensitive the HDR is network problems as well the problems with the unsupported buggy code.
Meanwhile, qtube...
Advanced Packages! Of course; now installed. I’d forgotten all about that. When the HDR runs smoothly ie when I don’t mess with it, I tend to slide back down the learning curve. Then when I get the impulse to dig out the 2TB drive and have another look at the problem, it’s back up the...
Thanks. The Portal is no problem with my 500GB drive. On the other hand, the 2TB drive makes the HDR temperamental, but the one thing that consistently causes it to freeze is the final swirling circle as the selected iPlayer programme begins to stream. So I use that as the acid test...
Using my spare FoxT2 HDR I get the same behaviour: with the 500GB HDD, the unit is stable and it passes the iPlayer test, whereas the 2TB HDD will not stream from iPlayer and then causes the unit to freeze. So I have now tested both HDDs with 2 FoxT2 HDR power supplies, and, because others...
Prompted me to look on the 2 HDDs:
Original 500GB says +5V 0.316A; +12V 0.155A
2TB says. +5V 0.55A; +12V 0.37A
That’s quite a difference. I never considered the power requirements might be bigger for a larger HDD and certainly not so much bigger.
Worth further investigation.
I appreciate all the kind help and advice. With the 1TB Seagate Pipeline HDD installed, the HDR behaves similarly but not identically. Interesting and intriguing. I have some more troubleshooting plans, including ‘scoping the power supply whilst making the unit misbehave, and will...
I ran the disk diagnostic and attach a screenshot. I feel sure there’ll be a log or text file output of this diagnostic but I haven’t found it, so apologies for my having sent a screenshot. Thankfully, it all fit on one page.
I take note of the other comments on the quality of HDD from...
Many thanks: that gives me hope. I should have put a question mark after my final sentence. It wasn’t really a statement.
So even though nothing untoward is detected in fixdisk, the HDD could still be faulty?
I have a Seagate “Pipeline HD .2 1TB”. This came from another Fox T2 HDR; I...
With the original 500 GB Seagate Video 3.5 HDD fitted, my Fox T2 HDR is stable; iPlayer, for example, works every time. The unit will run for weeks without freezing.
However, I installed a 2TB Seagate Video 3.5 HDD and formatted it through the HDR. I have run fixdisk 3 or 4 times as...
From tempmon, I would see a steady-state temperature of around 42 whereas now I see 33/34C. Because of the wings of the heatsink, I couldn’t get the thermometer gun in close enough on the old heat sink to get a spot reading on the centre only, but it was hot enough for me not to want to keep...
It’s running cooler than before; I have a Fluke infrared thermometer and it showed that the top left hand corner was the hottest (stood facing the front panel) at least as hot as the central part. But the proof is in the puddung: it doesn’t freeze any more.
I did tap around the motherboard...
Good point. The original heatsink was very tinny and flimsy. More importantly, it was stuck to the cpu (I’m guessing the chip is the cpu) with self-adhesive tape and not thermal paste. The heatsink needed a great deal of persuasion to release from the chip; so much so that the force needed to...
Found the source of the instability on my spare HDR-Fox T2, which caused it to freeze/lock up every couple of hours.
I replaced the heatsink
With a home-made one
And comparing my spare box with my main HDR-Fox T2, it’s quite clear there are significant differences on the motherboard...
From af123’s reply to a previous post:
And the notes on the CFW download page:
“Install as standard firmware update to perform a full system flush and reset. This is designed to assist recovery from crash/reboot loops and to clear everything out after running RMA mode.”
I thought System...
Strange thing on my spare, temperamental HDR-Fox T2: yesterday I ran a system flush using the System Flush Update File in the Firmware Downloads. On restart, the wizard asked for a coupke of settings and then ran the channel search. I then entered the IP address in my browser and to my...
Based on your comments about the network in an earlier thread, I changed the ethernet cables for Cat 7 ones, and I also tried it disconnected from the network.
Hopefully, the spare box will never be needed. In the meantime, I’ve now got more food for thought and will persevere to get a better...
My main HDR-Fox T2 is relatively stable: I can access iPlayer in the Humax portal without problem, and a crash is very rare. In contrast, my spare HDR-Fox T2 seems quite “fragile” in that at times it will crash almost if you look at it. And certainly, accessing iPlayer via the portal will...
