  I spotted it immediately without knowingly reading it or being interested in the piece and rewound to make sure. Until fairly recently I'd have put in the spurious 'n' but it's nice to know that my brain's pattern recognition database gets updated.

  Most likely the cap as it will have failed short-circuit and the diode will be fine so just replace the cap. That said it's always possible if unlikely the cap has gone open and the resulting switching spikes have caused the diode to give up.

  Coming in late on this and apols if it's already been mentioned, but H2testw is my go-to flash memory tester for Windows. Does HDDs too I now see.

10. Remote oddity
  
  The remotes that do are a mixture of first (natural retaining strap) and second (black strap) versions so this must be a very early one. From a thread linked to by BH above this one may have been sold with an HD-FOX T2 which might explain its condition.

  Just bought a used early remote on ebay - the one with the translucent battery hatch strap which comes apart easily - and on out-of-the-box testing there's a funny. All the other remotes I've got here, regardless of age and version, transmit a single IR code on pressing PVR, TV, DVD & AUDIO but...

  If I had this problem I'd be have a look at the voltage levels of the HDMI signals. It has the feel of something to do with the local SMPSU for the HDMI i/f if there is one, possibly the output cap losing value as seems to be happening elsewhere on the board.
