Thanks for looking up that reference, Luke. Unfortunately, it leaves off at the same point as I did. I'm currently writing the next section of my post, which incidentally does not have a happy ending, but does have a lot more information.
Before I moved to Brisbane I checked for compatibility. The UK uses DVB-T2, while Australia uses the older DVB-T standard. I thought my humax would be backward compatible with the older standard. I decided to take it anyway because I had 800MB unwatched UK programs on the hard disk.
I was...
Excellent summary, thanks.
I have followed your advice and set my system power-on and power-off timers for a 2 hour window every day. I realise the system will also be accessible from the LAN while it is recording. (I have installed disable-dso and disable-ota to stop those undesirable...
Oh! I didn't realise there isn't any feedback... if you don't even know which line of the menu is currently selected, you'd never be able to navigate into the 4 levels of submenu. My ir-remote idea is a non-starter for offsite management.
Excellent advice! Thanks everyone.
I haven't tried it yet, but if the humax is half-awake or full-awake, would I be able to re-activate the DLNA server using the menu on the remote control provided by the "ir" package. (I have it installed and can't see why it might depend on the DLNA server.)
I have a hdr fox t2 with 1TB disk, running 1.02.29 firmware and custom firmware 2.13.
Since recovering my disk a week ago (more thanks!) the humax has been running fine - playing, recording, deleting. I installed auto-unprotect, disable-dso, disable-ota and rs a month or so ago. I installed...
It has been 5 days since recovering my hard disk. Too soon to be certain, but long enough to make a preliminary assessment.
smartctl still says the Current_Pending_Sector and Offline_Uncorrectable counters are both zero. It also says the last recorded error is the one from the original problem...
Thanks for explaining so patiently. I expect you've explained this elsewhere, but it is a useful postscript to my story.
With some regrets, I am inclined to agree with all your observations. It is an interesting general point now that "smart" devices are becoming so pervasive in our society...
I wasn't paying enough attention and my relief at making progress caused me to see "af123" and "xyz321" as the same when in a small font in the left margin.
Sorry! My thanks to you too! I really appreciate the help everyone gave me, especially over Christmas. I would probably have given up and...
Yes, now you mention it I can see it and run it from the web interface - of course, with my "you must reformat" problem, the web i/f was not available. However, I had not previously realised the extra packages were installed on /mnt/hd2/mod. If something nasty happens in future, I will check...
Thanks for your comprehensive replies to my questions.
Well, based on this recent experience, I will regularly:
run smartctl and analyse the report for any signs of drive failure.
periodically run e2fsck on my /dev/sdx partitions - when they are not mounted, of course!
backup decrypted...
I have a few "debriefing" questions:
In hindsight, should we have recognised the root of this problem earlier? I think not because a) I didn't remember that I had already installed smartctl, and b) the symptoms were associated with the partition table at block zero.
Shouldn't the drive have...
mkfs.ext3 -m 0 -O sparse_super /dev/sda1That worked fine.
After rebooting, a simple "df" showed me all three /dev/sdx's were mounted successfully.
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 17280 17280 0 100% /

There was no need! When I rebooted in maintenance mode and used gfdisk to print the current partition table, it showed:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000 GB, 1000202273280 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders, total 1953520065 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes

This time I noticed your edit and so used the correct seek value.

Yes, I was able to mount /dev/sda2 on /mnt/hd2, and was somewhat surprised to discover that /mnt/hd2/mod/bin/smartctl was there already - I must have installed it when the web interface was working. I didn't need your version, because mine ran OK. I thought it was best to post the report...
Oh dear... I saw your original email, but the edit had not yet arrived!
So I did a reboot. /sys/block/sda still had the correct size, but sda1-3 all disappeared. Not surprisingly, tune2fs didn't find them any more either. I guess the dd of zeros really did something!!!
fix-disk back to...
Confirmed as not necessary in my case.
This looked like a good idea to me because zeroing the first 4k bytes of the device would wipe out any residual data that might have been making the partition table ambiguous. Being naturally pessimistic, I expected to get another I/O error, BUT the dd...
Don't be confused by the sizes from the OP's 1TB disk, which isn't identical to mine. Were you calculating ONLY from MY /sys/block/sda and gfdisk values?
I tried to write the new table. Not surprisingly gfdisk got an error on the read, so I replied "i" to ignore it. Unfortunately, it then got...
