My advice would be to disconnect the hard drive and see if it boots.
IF it is a file system issue then it could be recovered by connecting it to a computer using Linux and using the file system repair tools.
I have purchased a few Humax remotes from the Remote Control Shop and they have all appeared to be genuine Humax products and to function without any issues.
In what way do you want to control the Aura? There is an app available for Android and Apple phones that allows you to view the programme guide and set recordings and a few other things.
It wasn't a standard Windows update but an update provided by CrowdStrike which I wouldn't expect to have any impact on the average home computer user.
As far as I know the firmware resides entirely in flash. I think you will find that you can install the standard firmware with the hard drive disconnected; I don't recollect actually doing it on an HDR-FOX T2 but I have certainly done it multiple times on earlier Humax models.
That is exactly how the standard firmware works as I understand it with all the software in flash RAM. The custom firmware must put some some software on the HDD because there is not enough storage on the motherboard.
In my case after doing a reset, the recorded programs were preserved and can be played without problems. I dd lose the schedule of future recordings and the settings.

I moved away from TSOHost some years ago because the quality of support deteriorated markedly when the original owners sold out. I am now with Krystal and the support and reliability is good but the cheapest package (for one site only) is now £70 and the next package up is £110 for 5 sites...
If you install the custom firmware you can get access to the SMART data that the hard drive stores to give an indication of its health. Not easy to interpret but plenty of users here can give you advice about whether the data means the hard drive needs replacement.
