One modern language usage that bugs the hell out of me is saying "learnings" rather than "lessons". Seems to be a particular favourite of losing sports teams trying to take the positive out of a poor performance.
No matter which variant of 5/Five they go for it will always make them sound like fifth (out of four) in the pecking order of the main FTA broadcasters. Perhaps they need to bite the bullet and go extreme left field in a rebrand and call themselves Best (of the Rest) for example.
And yet aftermarket screens that plug into old DIN slots are readily available to provide older vehicles with the modern ICE experience.
I recently changed to a newer car (from 1999 to 2019) yet was disappointed with its ICE screen. In particular when playing music/podcasts over Bluetooth from...
It is still a thing. We had a temporary replacement work van a couple of weeks ago with a radio that sat there saying
WAIT 11 MINUTES THEN ENTER THE SECURITY CODE
Except even after much longer than 11 minutes it did not let you enter the code. That is why I have a portable Bluetooth speaker...
I got told off during an advanced driving session given by a police trainer for not using engine braking but braking and block changing down when approaching a junction. A little unfair as I used engine braking when in staccato traffic but which had the disadvantage of not alerting the driver...
That will just about cover the few seconds it takes for a clerk to read the fixmystreet report and mark it as no action needed without any investigation.
Is that true of all makes and models of circuit breakers?
Just wondering if Martin left out telling us of another step involving turning off the whole consumer unit at some point which is when the circuit breaker then go reset?
As for the initial issue then a nearby lightening strike (had one...
By the 80s most people mindsets were being fixed in how the personal computer architectures worked ignoring what was going on in the wider world of computing. Another clue thing to think about: Ever had to work with ones-complement arithmetic and the use of negative zero?
But how much smaller is not fixed. I have worked with six bit bytes and nine bit bytes in my time. Anyone with the right background can name that hardware platform. :)
You are right of course and I am always irritated when I see them get mixed up as a scaling prefix: M for Mega and m for milli. In this case mixing up (m)etre with (M)olar concentration I see as less likely to cause confusion for the average reader.
Listening to this week's In Our Time about life in the universe one of the experts said a new 39M telescope would be four times larger than the currently largest 10M telescope. Surely it would be sixteen time larger, even more if you take the curvature of the dish into account?
You can avoid both those issues by watching all BBC programmes on iPlayer. No Press Red Button clutter, no voice over on the closing credits. Presumably all part of "educating" the viewing masses that streaming is the future and broadcast TV (Freeview/DTT and satellite etc) will be turned off...
In those days the viewers would (mostly) have known where the colours where spotted and it was only when a colour was knocked well away from its spot that extra info was useful.
