I use the telnet menu more often than not to update packages.
Given I still have my parents and my aunt's boxes to do, what method avoids this issue? I can't put them on auto update, my aunt has no broadband for a start and I use my iPad as a hotspot when I update her box.
I'll run the...
I should added, re-flashing the boot loader is risky. If there is a power cut or the flashing fails in the middle for whatever reason then the device is likely bricked unless you have access to JTAG and the required files to flash a boot loader into a blank device.
Just programming the existing...
I updated both my HDR Fox T2s by USB stick to 3.14, all went fine. Then I used the telnet menu on both to run fix-flash-packages diagnostic and rebooted both boxes, all fine again. Then I used the telnet menu "upgrade" option to upgrade the remaining packages on both boxes and got the same set...
It is very common for flash devices to have a few blocks either at the bottom or the top of the flash that the flash manufacturer says are more reliable. This is done by building them on larger feature sizes, or using less bits per flash cell (typically 1 bit instead of 2), or using stronger (or...
I dug out my failed box to see if this would fix it, only to find that it is now working fine after weeks of not working previously. There are no brown components in the power supply, and when it failed it did so even with the hard disc removed so I know it isn't that problem. I think in the...
Exactly. My mum and my aunt are not remotely interested in this stuff and they would much rather daily life were as it was 20 years ago and they could go into a bank to withdraw cash, open an account or pay bills. Similarly they would much rather they could still buy everything they want in a...
That is sadly the situation these days, repair shops barely exist any more. Fortunately I'm pretty competent at soldering at least for through hole components. I'm rather shaky on surface mount though.
My mum is 81, my dad 87, my mum's sister 84. They all struggle with technology to various degrees. Mum can never remember which button on the remote control is Pause despite it looking the same across many devices for at least 50 years. My dad has a Windows 11 PC that he manages to use for web...
On Apple TV 4K gen 3, the only device I have that I can run iPlayer on to feed my TV (on which iPlayer no longer works directly), iPlayer is limited to 720p. No 1080p and no UHD.
Lack of 5.1 sound on iPlayer has certainly been discussed. I wouldn't say it has been explained, unless the BBC...
I'd rather the time was spent complaining about something that might actually get fixed or improved. For example complaining that iPlayer HD is in 720p when it ought to be 1080p, or complaining that no iPlayer service (SD, HD or 4K) has 5.1 sound even when the same thing broadcast on Freeview HD...
Interesting and thanks for reporting. The only thing I can think of is some flash location was not reading correctly and reprogramming fixed it. Flash doesn't hold its contents forever, what I don't know is whether reading it frequently slows down or accelerates that wear. It might differ for...
Why are you so vociferous in advocating action? We're basically proposing the opposite view, neither of which standpoint is morally more right than the other.
I just don't want people to waste their time. This is a done deal. Red Button is on life support on the BBC and will be quietly switched...
But equally you should learn to choose your battles. Campaigning to keep Red Button text is a completely lost cause, many new TVs don't support it at all. It's a done deal, it's only a matter of how many years it takes Red Button to finally die. Campaign where there is some chance of actually...
