      I realise you seemed to be happy with the outcome of the fixdisk, but I don't understand how the file system can be intact after an aborted run and the log 11 megalines long (and truncated with it). Perhaps @prpr can explain. My feeling is there will be a gremlin somewhere, even if it's not...

      ...of sda1, but being a much bigger partition the list of errors occupies the bulk of the log file (90%? – the sda1 log was big enough!)... but fixdisk runs out of memory and aborts early without completing normally. That's why there is no "summary" at the end. "memory allocation failed"...

      Woke up to "FixDisk Done". Rebooted with "x", OK. *Deleting... gone. Deleted 8 progs that had been deleted umpteen times previously but kept returning, they're gone now. 1013GB available, was 1002GB before deleting. Used red Record button to record 1 minute of BBC News (bad, of course)...

      Well done. It can take a long time if the file system has significant damage. If you can leave it running overnight if need be.

However, prior to reinstalling the packages (from the installation web page at the WebIF URL), you probably ought to run fixdisk from the maintenance mode menu (you get into maintenance mode from the telnet menu).

      ...anything important on it i don't think but if i hook it into one of those sata 3 to usb things then plugged it into the now working box and new hard drive will i be able to see if there is anything worth saving . / copying across to the new hard drive ? or will it still need the CF fixdisk ?

      ...by a corrupt file, but IIRC the corrupt file is not on the HDD, so simply formatting the HDD does not clear the corrupt file. Running the CF fixdisk option (from the maintenance mode Telnet menu) is the best way to sort this out, because it is able to delete the corrupt file directly...
