That got it. After a bit of reading I fired up my EeePC netbook and opened a command console, then:
Code:
sudo bash
fdisk -l (to identify the flash drive)
umount /dev/sdc1
mkfs -t ext2 /dev/sdc1

Plugged the result into HD1 and bingo, the installation web page appeared. Conclusion: the ext2 conversion process in the Telnet maintenance mode menu isn't thorough enough.

Hellfire. I plugged the 32GB UPD into HDR3 and got this:
Code:
HDRFOX3# ls media
HDRFOX1/ My Music@ My Photo@ My Video@ drive1/ drive2/
HDRFOX3# cd media/drive2
HDRFOX3# ls
ls: ./mod: Input/output error
lost+found/
HDRFOX3#

I have now acquired a Verbatim 32GB Pinstripe to trial. I used a Parted Magic live boot on my PC to format it Ext2 and then rsync the content of my operational UPD to it. I plugged the 32GB into the HD-FOX in place of the usual UPD and booted, expecting everything to be as normal and.. no CF.
