Seems like a simple task … not done it, so maybe there is an easy way.
While I have taken files off Humax … quite convoluted to get them from M2TS into MP4 or similar.

I want to do the reverse … if I have an MP4 file what is easiest way to import into Humax.

I did some Googling … and it shows ..when transferring files to the Humax from an external source (like a PC via USB), the most compatible format is generally .mp4 with H.264 video and AAC or AC3 audio. The Humax can also sometimes play files in other container formats like .AVI or .MOV

What is easiest way to import …
Or can I get Humax to play a .mp4 direct off a usb stick ?
 
With some reservations the hummy can play .MP4 files up to 1080p, whether from a usb stick, on the hummy's own hd or via a network connection to a NAS.
AAC audio is supported but not, I think, AC3.
Some 'trick play' functions that are possible with .ts files may not work.
I suggest just give it a try!

As you say I can give it a try, was just wondering if anybody knew of easiest way.

So you've produced some .MP4 files.

Why not load/playback some of your .MP4 files onto/on the Humax so see if they play well?

This is a typical example of somebody wanting all the i's dotted and t's crossed for them before they get out of bed. It's not hard, it doesn't even require much experimentation... just do it!
  1. If it plays off an external drive it will play when copied into the internal drive.
  2. You can copy it across any way you like (unless there's encryption to deal with), even by network transfer (FTP, SMB, NFS). If you intend to use an external drive, you have to be aware of file size limitations according to how the drive is formatted, see Things Every... (click) section 12.
  3. It's not "convoluted" at all to repackage into different container formats, so long as you're not changing codecs. All you need is to understand how to set up something like FFMPEG, and there is a GUI front-end for FFMPEG to make it easier for those scared of the command line, but broadly speaking if you do something like ffmpeg -i <input_file> <output_file> it will auto-detect what you are trying to do and do it. The only wrinkle is if a particular container is not compatible with a particular codec.
  4. If you want an imported video to work the same on the HDR-FOX as a native recording (title in the media list, trick play, bookmarks...) you'll need it in M2TS format with a .TS file extension and then rebuild sidecars from the WebIF. .MP4 (or anything else not TS) will be listed in the media list by its filename, not a media list tag, and the best you'll get of native conveniences is a resume point.
  5. If you're not bothered about (4) above, MP4 / H.264 / AAC is the obvious/reliable way to go. See Index (click), Miscellaneous... Video File Support & Manipulation... Codec Support (especially the third link).

Not produced anything myself …. But I have access to some training video in MP4 which would be easier to watch via Humax on TV rather than on Laptop.

I did not know if we could just ‘add’ MP4 files to Humax HDD
When I did reverse it was convoluted to convert mt2s to MP4 …. as none of converters I had would handle

You definitely can, although whether they play will depend on the codecs in the MP4. Have you never played with QTube (WebIF Queue Video Download facility)? The YouTube downloads are MP4...

Well, it used to be, but YouTube are currently winning the battle with the downloaders. Not sure what the current situation is with iPlayer downloads. Either way, you seem remarkably uninformed of what's available in the CF ecoverse.
 
I may well be uninformed.
I’m a retired person, and mainly just a product user, I’m not fully clued up on the technology, apologies for that.
I use a free youtube downloaded app to get the mp4 files I need, I was just asking the question on easiest way to put onto HDD.
