Are any of the DTR series reliable?

Can you be more specific? Branding in what way? Photograph of the tv screen?

You could always leave BT and save a load of money.

Is unsubing the same as supering? And should it have two bees? As in two bees and not two bees? That is the question.

No, it's a BT box.
Whether it is a BT box or not does not influence its behaviour one bit.

The origin of the box governs when updates are available for the software.
It is the ISP connection that governs how the youview software behaves.

For some reason your box does not think that it is connected to a plusnet ISP and that is why it gets neither logos nor an expanded epg that includes the plusnet channels (that would be useless to you without an subscription).

So, a BT Youview box connected via Plusnet does NOT get customized as Plusnet. Fine.

No - Luke explained in post #29:

Not an explanation, though. It implies the box gets customized by the ISP, which it doesn't. My box knows it is a BT box and never customizes itself as anything else, irrespective of the ISP. It connects to BT for updates, in fact, it could hardly do anything else, since its firmware is BT.
