Backup files from HUMAX HDD to External HDD?

Can anyone help please..... this is my first and only Forum on anything .... and it is all a bit new to anon techi like me.

Before "trying" to reset my HUMAX HDR FOX T2 (about 22 months old), I wish/ need to back up stored programs to copy back later NOT to watch on a PC

Is this possible and how do I achieve this, please?

Background confusion:
1) I plugged in an external HDD and it seems to only allow me to copy files to the HUMAX HDD and I have no need / desire to do that;
2) An e-mail from the HUMAX support people mentioned that and external HDD used with the system needs to be formatted to FAT32. Not only do i not know what that is or how to do it but when i looked on line that seemed to not be a simple matter or reliable and I do not wish to reformat my external HDD'
3) This doesn't seem to make sense, as the HUMAX did seem to be willing to allow me to copy files from my external HDD to the HUMAX HDD

Reason for all this AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGNNNNNEEEEESSSSSS is that I am unable to record anything (plenty of space) and the systems keeps showing deleting (non-stop) even though nothing is being deleted and it doesn't change when i do watch and delete files.

The next stage will be that I apparently will need to downgrade the software and then upgrade it and that sounds like a while new headache. The HUMAX e-mail mentioned FAT32 ahain and memeory keys and laptops. EVERYTHING IS IN ANCIENT MARSIAN

Am I a plonker or is this not for the faint hearted?

HELP PLS

Peter

Just to emphasise that I only wish to copy to an external HDD to reset/ downgrade / upgrade the box and software (A second DAUNTING) task.
I have no current need to view on the laptop but that would be a non urgent bonus.

Help THANKS

Please read Things Every... (click) section 12 - that will explain why you are having problems with your external drive.

I don't understand why you would need to downdate the firmware and then update it again. All you really need to do is use the Humax menus to reformat the internal storage (which is why you are trying to save off the content first).

It seems likely that what has happened is your hard drive has a file system error which is causing it to be read-only. We can fix that without any other mucking about, and without needing to save off the content first. See Quick Guide to Disk Recovery (click).

Many thanks and fingers crossed.

Will look at the sections you recommended. I am exhausted and puzzled more that lazy so sorry that I have not already read those sections.

FYI re my "downgrading / upgrading" comments the HUMAX support team sent me{

"I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing difficulties with your box. It would indeed seem like there is a problem with the hard-drive and the best option to resolve this requires you to firstly downgrade the software, carry out a format and to then update the software"

I really hope that you Quick Guide to recovery etc. takes me out of my misery and stops may family giving me a hard time (not giving me a new HDD!).

Fingers crossed and I promise to lead a good life it things go well.

Humax support are clueless, frankly. Your best (and quickest) bet is to install the custom firmware and run the fix-disk procedure. You will need a USB stick, and a PC with a Telnet program. I presume you're a Windows user, but which version?

DIOLCH (Welsh for thanks)

I too am clueless and maybe should work for HUMAX!

Apart from not ignoring my "better half" and son, I now need to fathom out. with your help?, what is the "Custom firmware" (I guess I get that from their site?) and what is Telnet! (Telstar was a satellite, I think!)

I can look on Google, I guess.

However, there is still the potential issue of the system only accepting devices formatted in FAT32 and I have no idea how the USB or my external HDD was formatted.

Is this more HUMAX "HUMBUG"?

Thanks

Sorry forgot to add

Windows 7 on this Tishiba and Windows 8.1 on the new Dell which is givnig me headaches and I need to go on a Encrypted Esoteric Cryptic Ancient Martian course!

Nar, don't Goole. Stick around here, there will be someone who can help out a numpty (self description, or at least close ;)) in a bit.
I'm not sure whether we have anyone here who is fluent in EECAM though.

'Tis all explained in the aforementioned references and cross-references, if you are patient enough to follow them. Repeating the same here will be just repetition.

Well, you're allowed to be, it's not your product.
Custom firmware is not from Humax! If you want, click the "Wiki" link at the top left of the page on this forum and you will find a load of information (that you probably won't understand!).
Instead, download this which is the latest CF, unzip it (eek!) and copy it onto your USB stick (eek again!).
However, there is still the potential issue of the system only accepting devices formatted in FAT32 and I have no idea how the USB or my external HDD was formatted.
In all probability, your USB is going to be FAT32.
Windows 7 on this Tishiba...
On that machine, click the Start button and type "telnet" in the Search box. Hopefully it will come up with "telnet.exe" under (Programs). Click on that and you should get a "Micro$oft Telnet" prompt.

Dear TwllDu and PrPr,

Thanks to you both. As mentioned earlier I am a very new Forum-er on the block and have never used Facebook, any Forums and even getting baffled by Google and threads. I think that your both helping me together with my naughty / cynical sense of humour and replying to both of you on top of my newness has rather clouded the issues and APOLOGIES to both of you.

Re your helpful comments: TwllDu, I will read the sections and have just printed them off and it would, indeed, be pointless to repeat them in this thread.

Re your bonus info prpr, thanks re the firmware and Telnet points will look into that tomorrow probably. Could end up in a divorce court if I don't go into husband . daddy mode soon.

Hard to believe that I have a Maffs B Sc and a BioChem MSc, have written many papers published in medical journal and had many years in computing jobs (mainframes) BUT I am a plodder and not the brightest button in the box! Thanks for your understanding.

Best wishes

For a novice, I recommend downloading and using PuTTY as per the wiki information referenced in post 3. The particular reason for this is that the guide in the wiki explains the use of PuTTY to obtain a Telnet connection to the HDR-FOX in great detail, and using the Windows 7 Telnet client instead will be slightly different. However, if you do choose to use the Windows Telnet client, the instructions in paragraph 4 under the Telnet section of my guide are probably sufficient.

Custom firmware is very simple, just follow the instructions.

Printing the text off is only slightly helpful, because this is the World Wide Web and web pages have a property that paper doesn't: the ability to click through to other supporting information.

Does not all this talk about CF depend on the OP having his Hummy connected to a network? But I suppose it's safe to assume that he has as he hasn't raised any queries re operating systems or telnet yet.

1) I plugged in an external HDD and it seems to only allow me to copy files to the HUMAX HDD and I have no need / desire to do that
This is probably because your external HDD is formatted as NTFS, the Humax will read NTFS but it won't write to NTFS. You will need to format a USB HDD or USB memory stick as FAT32 in order to be able to write to it, you also need FAT32 to install the Custom Firmware as mentioned in #5. A newly purchased USB memory stick will probably be formatted in FAT32 when you buy it, but if you need to format a USB device this is possible to do on a P.C. running virtually any version of Windows

I have popped back on-line after a 36 ish hours gap to avoid divorce proceedings. I spent 4 hours the other nights with lots of help from the Forum and apologise again for my lack of clarity in some of my questions, info and points as well as limited brain power.

I have read quickly the "Everything you need to know" guide and quickly read the replies since I logged off -sorry I have cause some friction.

I have no time at the moment but will read both the guide and the above points again and slowly. Please don't waste time replying to this until I have had time to do more "homework" but .... a couple of quick points / info:

the HUMAX is not connected to the network - reasons ish I think that we had no idea what we were doing when we set it up or we failed but I can not remember

I have no idea if I can access the BBC portal, which the guide tells me will answer the question, but can always try;

Easy as it may be to most / all of you, I guess I will no doubt struggle and get nowhere (negative or simply been there before!)

I may well have an Ethernet cable but would not know one if it was on the table with mt spaghetti!

Regarding not raising queries re operating systems and Telnet (Trev's point), I was somewhat in a sea of confusion and didn't provide enough info to the Forum re the backgorund but also I HAD A FIXED CONCEPT in my mind that I used a memory key due to the HUMAX customer service info points made by teh twoking memebers who first started to help didnt really sink in (more apologies\)

As for Ezra's points re NTFS and Fat32, as mentioned earlier, I had no idea about these different formats and it is all rather puzzling re reading but not writing depending on the format and then there is the business re e new key probably having been formatted in Fat32. Gadzooks more things to learn about and how woudl i know and how do i change it if necessary!

I am EXCEPTIONALLY gratefully and not lazy but think that perhaps I should spent time on Goggle learning what all this is about? Formatting. ethernet, Fat32 etc?

I REALLY DO NOT WANT TO CAUSE ARGUMENTS OR WASTE PEOPLE'S TIME. As mentioned a few times, Forums are new to me and I am still learning teh ropes and pitfalls (re causing problems).

It I could pay someone locally to do it for me - assuming it would be short of £999,999 pounds - and teach me at the same time, I would go for that option.

Anyone any idea if these people exist and who would I look for in local directories / On-line search? Doesnt seem like a PC repair job or an Ariel installer or an IT specialist or a TV repair person. Generically tricky!

THANKS TO ALL. NEED TO LOG OFF FOR LUNCH (2 P.M. LOCAL TIME) . WILL READ UP AND GET BACK ON LINE IN NEXT 24 HOUR TO ADD TO THE 5 -6 HOURS SO FAR! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

As a direct answer, YES, as indicated in the posts above.
As an indirect answer, why do you want to factory reset (FR) the T2 in the first place. This thread has concentrated on what you want to do, but it may not be at all necessary. A reset to factory will leave your recordings intact unless you chose the option to format the HDD. (are they really that important anyway? "It's only TV" to quote another member here)
Give us a better understanding of the problem that has caused you to believe that an FR is your only way forward, and perhaps someone will come up with an answer that doers not involve FR, and explain in simple steps how to achieve it.
