bad subtitles on tv with AVI/SRT files

#1
I'm using srt with avi files on the Foxt2 through a hard drive connected to the back usb port. It has no problem discovering the files and it plays well, except the subtitles in srt form. They do appear on time (in sync) but it seems not to recognise certain elements, and displays them as < > , sometimes at the beginning and end and sometimes in the middle of a sentence which makes it hard to read. The subs also appear very thin.
I've tried a different language and size settings w the controls but it doesn't improve.
Could there be a codec issue and is there ways to improve/update ?

Note: No problem with files through another DVD/USB player. Both to an analog TV through scart
