Can't cut file

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, as I haven't wanted to cut a file for some time, or if something has gone wrong with my customised firmware.

Anyway, I have the customised firmware, I have a file with two bookmarks. I put the file into the folder "move file here" in the Cut folder of the Edit folder. And nothing happens. The file just sits there and never produces output. I've tried with two files.

Just for the record, in case it helps with diagnosis, I put (by mistake) a file with no bookmarks into that folder and got an error message that it had no bookmarks.

Also for the record, the files I tried were formed by joining a couple of other files, and the join went ok.

What "Cut folder"? What "Edit folder"? Some sort of screen-shot would help understand what you're talking about. There are several ways to access this functionality.

Are you talking about the nicesplice-magic-folders I didn't know anyone still used the Magic Folders interface!
The folders may have been left around from a previous installation of the package

It is MUCH easier to use the webif to run crop and splice operations

Now I understand, which would have been MUCH easier with some context in Post 1 (and preferably the title).

As a general rule, if things are not working as expected, it is always worth a reboot – and then if that didn't help, run fix-flash-packages and another reboot.

In this case though, that will make no difference.

That package is an ugly mess. I've just uploaded an update that tidies it up, so at least it installs and uninstalls correctly. I can't vouch for the rest of it, but I think it works.

Agreed. Not that any of those things work very well IMHO.

OK. Since I installed the custom firmware many years ago, I can't remember what I did. I guess it must have been the Nicesplice magic folders, as others have mentioned. I'll check further. I didn't know there had been changes, since it has been working fine until now. Sorry I was not more specific in my original post, but I didn't even know what other information might be needed. I've learned now.

Right, I've taken a look. I have Nicesplice and Nicesplice Magic Folders installed, and have always been using Magic Folders. As yet (I'll play around further) I don't see what the advantage is of using the web rather than Magic Folders. But that may be because I normally use the remote to record, browse, etc, rather than having a phone near to use the web.

How do you move files using the web? It's probably straightforward, but it doesn't seem as obvious as using the remote. Does one have to cut the file and then paste it?

Sorry I didn't use the right word.; it's called Cut in the Magic Folders, though.

I can, of course, move files using the remote if it can't be done on the web. But I definitely want to be able to move files into subfolders of my Video folder.

As you say, the web is easy if one has access to the web immediately available. I always have the remote at hand, but my phone is often further away (and some of my friends don't have a smartphone and would need to start their computer in order to use the webif)

I've done some more checking and can crop files using the web, but using Magic Folders doesn't seem to work. It used to work fine, and I would still like to get it working again so that I have a choice of which method to use.

That's no problem at all, all I meant was it isn't necessary for performing crops using the WebIF. See the copy/cut/paste operations.

We understand not everyone can or wants to use the web interface (WebIF), but it is so much more powerful everything else has got left behind. Nicesplice Magic Folders was a means to an end when phones and tablets were less de rigueur.

Have you done anything which might have upset NMF's functionality, such as updating the CF? Note prpr's comments above, and perhaps update your package.

I may have just been so used to one way of working that I didn't want to change to a better way.

No I haven't updated the CF recently, nor have I done anything consciously to affect it before the issue arose. I did, after my initial enquiry here, run fix-flash-packages and also removed the Magic Folders and then installed the latest version. It didn't help.

But maybe I need to reinstall the whole CF, unless I am doing something silly (quite possible). On my desktop computer I can browse files, and use Opt+ for various functions. On my phone I can browse files and see a list of files, but I don't seem to be able to do anything with them. Tapping on an item, swiping left and swiping right (which are the most obvious things to do )all do nothing, and there is no visible Opt+ button to tap. Am I doing something silly? If so, what? I have checked that my web browser points to (local address)/m/browse.jim

Browse on the mobile version seems to be missing nearly all functionality! 😭

You would need to go to the desktop version of the site to get the full browse function and to see the Diagnostic page for log files
I don't know if Magic Folders writes to a log file, if so it would be worth checking that for error messages.
Also try another recording to see if there is problem in the file you are currently trying and try cropping the original recording using the desktop version of browse

What version of the webif is currently installed

I use the desktop version of webif on my iPad Pro 2022 and it is mostly fine. It does ask for my username and password annoyingly often as I'm moving between pages.

Ah, if browse doesn't work well on a phone, that does mean that using the remote may often be easier than the web. Desktop version on the phone is definitely too small for convenient use, though it does have all the functions.

Yes, I did try another file and had the same problem. And (I thought I mentioned) cropping using the desktop version does work.

I didn't see a log file that looked as if it could relate to Magic Folders. editMonitor.log is empty.

CF 3.12 build 3965
webif 1.5.3-5

I see that CF 3.13 came out years ago. I just hadn't bothered. I suppose that if I want to update I have to go through the whole process of putting the cf on a USB Stick, there's no shortcut. Can't harm to do it.

I don't know if the screen of my Humax box is just in a position where it is difficult to read or if it has failed (or been turned off somehow). I turned the machine on and was expecting to read something about loader version and firmware version on the screen, but certainly couldn't see anything.

There is now a package that will update the custom firmware. Personally I'd rather have the safety of using a USB stick. It's not as if it has to be done often these days.

The Vacuum Fluorescent Display gets very dim with use, eventually becoming almost unreadable. In very dark conditions you should be able to see something on it. I recently switched to an HDR Fox T2 I have never used (spare in storage since new) and the display is so bright I've used RedRing package to turn it down. This should also prolong its life.

I thought that might be it. I'll check tonight. I think I was somewhat worried that I would not be able to see that the installation went ok if I could not read the screen.

If you procastinate a bit longer then CF 3.14 will be released fairly soon with a dramatically easier installation method
