Because part of challenge of the game is to rely on memory, and the list is mainly an aid for adjudication. To consult the list is bordering on cheating (although advisable if you are averse to being ruled void).

My reason is far more subtle than that BH. I can't be arsed.

Only allowing add/delete at the ends does seem to be having the effect of keeping the words fairly short (I believe because as they get long it becomes hard to make a valid word with only one letter to change in the body). As such we are using a lot of the shorter words, so it's becoming more and more important to check the list before you post.
When I update the list I will almost certainly find duplications unless the list is wrong, but as I generally only do this once a day in late evening a duplication earlier in the day can go a long way before it's trapped if no-one else spots it.

I had come to the same conclusion. Another complication is that, this being the third such game, it's hard to remember whether words previously occurred in this game or previous ones.
