Cooling fan running all the time - even in standby

I've just managed to bring a HDR-FOX T2 back to life by replacing a HDD power supply capacitor (a known restart cycle issue detected and documented by some wonderful people). But after the repair the cooling fan wasn't running at all, even when the unit seemed to be quite hot, so I installed the "fan" package, rebooted and then tried a variety of settings up to 100% speed in the fan package config but it still didn't start. Suspecting that the fan may have died, I removed it and tried it on a 9V battery...and it sprang into life. So I put it back into the HDR-FOX and it started running straight away. But it now won't stop, even when the unit is in standby (no HDD running). Amending the fan package config down to 0% speed made no difference, so I uninstalled the package and rebooted. The fan still runs all the time - I suspect at full speed as it's quite noisy.

Does anyone know whether this behaviour could possibly be caused by the fan package (and if so anywhere that I can look to check/reset the behaviour)...or is it more likely yet another sign that the HDR-FOX is showing it's age as components degrade? I'm assuming that it can't be a fault with the fan itself. I guess that I could either put up with the fan being on all the time...or disconnect it and take the risk of overheating. Does anyone have any experience of running this unit with no fan cooling? Any thoughts/suggestions much appreciated.

It's rather unlikely. You can check whether the relevant files are still somehow installed, by issuing this at a command prompt:
Code:
ls -l /mod/boot/env.d/fan /mod/boot/xinit.d/install_fan /mod/boot/2/libfan.so*; cat /mod/boot/fanspeed
It should give you error messages followed by a number (the internal version of the last fan speed you set).

The hard disk will get too hot and will eventually suffer the consequences, so don't do it.
