Does anyone else have problems with their Aura repeatedly crashing? I don't think a goes by without it crashing. It's getting to the point where I'm going to take a sledge hammer to it. Before I do that, any suggestions?
It's been like that from early on, but I kept it because the speed of the interface was much faster than the 4000, but when you programs don't record properly it fails to serve a purpose.

The circumstances that cause the crashes would be helpful.
Some people have had lots of trouble with the Aura crashing. Others, including myself, appear to be luckier. Mine crashes occasionally, less often now that I understand some of my Aura's quirks and try to mitigate them. (eg. It used to crash on bringing out of standby nearly every morning. It rarely does it now that I remove the internet overnight, power down whilst tuned to BBC1 (SD), and set a power on timer for BBC1 (SD) every morning. Can't see why it seems to work but it works for me - so I do it)

Not within guarantee (a little over 2 yrs old).

I'm usually pretty good at spotting patterns, but honestly, there isn't any that I can see. I can turn it on of an eve when nothing is recording and it may crash soon after or I can be watching a recorded program with 2 more recording and it may crash (breaking the recordings). I sometimes see broken recordings at a time I wasn't even using it, so it crashed while just recording a single program. No commonality over channels, could be BBC or Quest or Ch4 etc..
 
I still stand by doing a Freeview reset any time ours starts misbehaving, which fortunately is pretty rare these days.

Even without any misbehaving, I still do a Freeview reset when there are any channel changes/shuffles or every couple of months or so.

Doing a Freeview reset does not format the hard drive unless you specifically ask it to. Even though you can back up the timers and reimport them I don’t bother, just take a photo of them and add back in manually once the reset is done.
 
Yes, a (non factory) reset is one option which I've done before - not sure how much it helped.
If I was struggling for any association, over the last few months, since the TLC channel started, I've been recording quite a number of old series and although I've not noticed any particular problem with TLC any more than any other channel, my HDD is fuller than it used to be, but I'm only talking 60% rather than 20% so nothing major.

There are three reset options. The two most people refer to are under the "Freeview Play Preferences" menu option.

Freeview Reset
All Freeview settings will be reset to default which includes any scheduled recordings and stored channels. Any installed app, recordings and Android TV specific settings will remain.

Factory Reset
This is a full reset, all settings, channels and installed apps will be removed. Your recordings will be saved.

Under "Device Preferences" there is a reset option. Use with caution-it appears to be a factory reset but you are likely to lose access to your recordings by normal means. They may still exist and take up disk space but you can't see them. You would need to reformat the HDD to remove them.

I'm sure one or more of the resets allows you to format the HDD - so care is required!
