I agree about exploring all options. Some will assume extraction automatically, others go for pain alleviation until other measures are practicable. It depends on the dentist. I've had both.
We're not talking relief of toothache here, I have an abscess. The infection needs to be accessed and eliminated. In any case, in my experience, any "fiddling around" ends up in eventual failure and loss of the tooth anyway, and I'm not a good subject for fiddling around with!
