Looking at the Series links at the bottom of my Schedule, I wondered whether they are automatically (or randomly) deleted?

Yes, they auto delete after a time limit of ( I think ) 12 weeks

They can also be cleaned up in the WebIF (presuming you are using custom firmware): any schedule entries with no matching events within the current EPG period can be deleted en-bloc, although that will of course mean a series that is (say) just taking a break will have its recording entry removed.
Be careful, I often find 'orphan' reservations there when the EPG hasn't fully populated the channel and there is actually a recording due within the next 7 days. I always check we have got the last programme of a series in our media folder before deleting the reservation.
