Forum software upgrade planned for 20/11/2024

"An unexpected database error occurred. Please try again later."

Phew.
It (the database) has unhelpfully crashed a couple of times since the upgrade. I've just upgraded to the latest release (mariadb 11.4.3 -> 11.4.4) and will keep an eye on it.

I tried to upload an image, which may have been too large, but instead of getting the appropriate error message I got something like "failed to parse".

I'll look at this one now.
Appears to be working now thx,

I guess nobody ever previously wanted to Remotely Schedule anything on "BBC H&W" or "Create & Craft" (now defunct)!

My RS has gone back to not displaying the program details for next Thursdays programs in the RS Visual display, just showing a recording date of Jan 1 1970. All the previous days programs (well the ones I selected anyway) show the correct details and recording date and time, it is just the new day doesn't.

Sending direct messages seems to generate an error:

1734776859833.png

but it does actually send the message. It's rather confusing though, as it leads people straight in to retrying with the resulting potential duplication.

The error message is the usual b@ll@cks too - tell me what the problem is, not just "server error". And "try again later" is not a solution, as if time somehow always magically fixes everything. It rarely does IME.

Not sure if it is related but I keep getting a message about postings failing when they are actually successful. Seems to be related to replying to direct messages.

That's exactly what the previous two posts relate to. It says "Oops", but actually the message got added to the message thread perfectly OK (as a page refresh would demonstrate).

Hi
Are RSS feeds working as expected?

If you are asking I guess they aren't!
You may be the only one trying to use them since AFAIK noone else has commented on them in two years.

RSS feeds seem to be considered old fashioned and I stopped trying to use them when sites I was following stopped feeding and Google RSS reader support ended. I just use the forums email notifications

Add that @af123 isn't on the case, it doesn't surprise me if RSSes have dried up. Are they generated automatically? What by? If only manual or when there is a firmware update, then I guess there won't be any.

It still very much works for me, I find it in wide use for a lot of sites, though I need to use a browser extension to find the RSS link (Firefox -Get RSS Feed URL). RSS avoids ad-laden and algo driven social media feeds, AI summaries robbing web sites of traffic, and general email overload. I use a feed reader called Newsblur, and I wouldn't want to be without it.

I think I was really asking whether it was a choice for RSS to not be working on the forum anymore, or if it just hadn't been flagged as broken.

It might not be broken, there just might not be anything being broadcast. Do you expect to find old content but are not? (I don't know, I have no experience.)

It seems up to date to me (AFAIK - I'm no expert):
