Hard Drive issues.

Ok, i have been happily using my HDR-FOX T2 since i purchased it back in 2009/2010 I believe? so its at least 3 years old now. I have the 500g version with Webif version 1.0.7-7 on CM 2.17 (Build 1699) on software version 1.02.32.

I logged in to delete some stuff the other day from the webif to be greated by the red warning box telling me that I have some issues with the drive and I should do a full maintance mode check of the drive. My first question is how to do this?

Also, preparing myself for the worse I am happy to go ahead and order a new 1TB or 2TB drive for a replacement for the drive that is in the humax. The old post I have read in advance of this suggests a couple of drives that I can no longer seem to get hold of. I have also read that the drive should ideally be a CE drive. Can anyone recommend a drive that is known to work with the humax? the cheaper the better but will go for 2tb if its more cost effective of course. Is the CE part of the drive important?

Thanks,

It is probably warning you about an increase in the number of reallocated sectors which is perfectly normal as the drive ages. If under Diagnostics in the web interface you click on Hard drive, what is the raw value of Attribute ID 5 (reallocated sector count)?

Great, thanks for the replies. I am currently running the long test on the drive since my wife has gone out and I have explained we have issue with the box I can fob her off when she comes back and tell her that it is now telling me to get maintenance since its on the screen :)

The long test is saying 22-Dec-2010 for some of the stuff its doing so I would suggest that was around the time I purchased it so yeah almost 3 years old. Can I expect the drive to last that long with almost constant daily usage?

Does the test program tell me what files are damage/unrecoverable? so I can delted them after its run the test? some are reporting as corrupt.

Here is the information from the dignostics page after I had run the fix-disk.

It is again telling me that the Disk pending sector count is : 10 (Was 11)
and the disk offline sector count is : 10 (Was 11)

You should upgrade to CF 2.19 then re-run fix-disk, preferably with the '-l' (long test) option.

Those pending sectors could do with sorting out; wait for advice from the real experts. I would say that the disk is otherwise in good condition and has plenty of service left in it.

Great, thanks for the replies. I am currently running the long test on the drive since my wife has gone out.
Did you run fix-disk or the long test from the menu? The long test just gives you information whereas fix-disk attempts to repair faults. It looks like you have 11 bad sectors on the disk that need fixing.

I ran fix-disk last night and followed the prompts it found 1 file that was corrupted and ask me to repair it to which I said yes. This moring it is reporting 23 errors instead of the 10 it was last night. I am of the view that this disk is failing if I am honest. Anyone offer a different view or know what I can do to fix?

Fix-disk sometimes requires more than one run to clear problems, so I would suggest running it again, after you get a clear run from fix-disk, you know the drive is currently stable

I am doing as suggested now then, updated to 2.19 and running the long fix-disk. Will report back after its done.

Ok, ran the full fix-disk on the drive and it seems to have carmed down a little now. Its still reporting as 20 offline unrecoverable and the same for current_pending sector but as long as it stay around that I`m happy. Will probably look at replacing the drive in the new year since I could do with more space anyway.

Just noticed it seem that the count is now at 30, I think this drive is slowly dying or am I wrong? I will look at replacing it after christmas.

It seems odd that the last run of fix-disk only detected 4 bad sectors. Did it run OK without any errors?

It is worrying that the number of pending sectors has increased but the reallocated sector count is still zero so there may be some life left in it.
