I've had another go:
  1. Used the HP utility to reformat the 64GB SE9 to FAT32 (without quick option);
  2. Loaded CF 3.13 onto it;
  3. Used it to update the HD-FOX (I was surprised it loaded!);
  4. Went through WebIF to run convert in maintenance mode. The conversion process reported that it couldn't create directories Video, Audio, or .tsr (does that indicate a problem?);
  5. Went through WebIF to install full interface, but it failed;
  6. Reload WebIF, and it's back to the "no disk found" stage;
  7. Go into maintenance mode and "no suitable drive for conversion detected" (no surprise there);
  8. SUI does not offer to format the drive.
Now what?

Now what: the HP utility now refuses to format the SE9, saying it is read only!

I notice nobody has any ideas how to solve my problems, and I am heading towards the conclusion that I have a duff one.

Not much time to spare at present, I've got a new one on order (<£20) and for the moment I have a spinning disk. I'll give BOOTICE a try at some point.

Exactly the same symptoms with a brand new fresh out of the packet Kingston Data Traveller SE9 (64GB). Plugged it in, went through Telnet and it offered the conversion to Ext2, installed CF, reboot and log in to WebIF... "No disk found".

So, either:
  1. Two duff SE9's on the trot (from different suppliers);
  2. My HD-FOX eats UPDs (but works OK with USB HDDs);
  3. There's something wrong with the relevant parts of the CF.

My money's on 3 then. I've got loads of spare 'duff' 64GB SSDs but I'm not near my HD currently. I might give it a try when I am...
(I need to insert my customary moan about (mis)use of 'either' here as well!)

Plugging in the disk you sent me, I'm getting an I/O error on the mod/ folder too. The drive looks identical to the one I use in my HD. I'll see if I can work out what's going on here, although it may have to wait a day or two until I have enough time.

I'm not entirely sure why but the Humax HD is not formatting the drive correctly. It appears to work fine until reboot then it gives an I/O error. I've tried this multiple times with two different USB drives and always get the same result.
Formatting them on an HDR then transferring to the HD works fine so that's what I'd suggest Black Hole does.
I suspect that it's due to a lack of memory which I can't fix. Perhaps an older version of mke2fs would cope better?

I guess that would have to be done manually - the convert option wont be in the HDR-FOX Telnet menu, will it?

Yes, manually. I'm going to experiment with some slightly older versions of the tools - I may have to include them for the HD

Have you tried formatting the USB stick to ext3 on a HDR-FOX (remote control handset) then opening a telnet session and converting to ext2 with tune2fs? IIRC you had some problems with this method, but was that on a HD-FOX?

Not having any luck with this unfortunately. I've tried formatting with the utilities that came with CFW 2.00 with the same result, and just tried with a standalone busybox version of mke2fs, also with the same result. It may be that these devices need to be formatted elsewhere in order to use them with the HD.

Does it break going from 32GB to 64GB then? At least the HD tools could flag up a problem if the UPD goes "over capacity", and maybe we need tool support on HDR for formatting a drive for use on HD.
