HDR-1800T -> HDR-2000T compatibility.

Hello hummy...

I have recorded many (Standard Definition) TV programmes using the HDR-1800T and transferred them to an external USB drive.

Will those programmes be viewable if I connect that USB drive to a Humax HDR-2000T?

How did you transfer them?
If you used the 1800T copy and saved to the USB drive plugged into the 1800T and none of the recordings are HiDef, then they ought to be playable on a 2000T. Any other method of transfer or if the recordings are HiDef then they won't be playable

Thanks for your quick reply.

All files were recorded on an 1800T - my 320GB, and then my 500GB.

All were copied to the USB drive when connected to the Humax and only by using the Humax media on-screen menus.

All files are SD (I learnt about HD protection / playback issues when I swapped my 320GB for the 500GB!)

No other media involved.

Now that you've mentioned swapping I can't be sure what you did when!
Anything you copied the way you said to the 500GB disk should be playable. If by swapped you mean you replaced the 1800T disk with the 500GB disk then anything recorded since the swap will not be playable if the 500GB disk is now plugged in (either in the Humax or via USB) to a different Humax (in this case a 2000T). Recordings copied before the swap should have been decrypted when copied. As the new recordings haven't been copied they are still encrypted. Clear? I hope so because I'm beginning to confuse myself!

Now that I've read your other post, I'm even more confused. Are there two 1800Ts (a 320GB and a 500GB) AND an external 500GB disk?
Ha!

Sorry...
I had a HDR-1800T 320GB and copied files from it to an external 1TB USB drive.

I then got a HDR-1800T 500GB and used the same external drive - all existing SD files on the external drive were happily played back on this newer Humax (I deleted the few unplayable HD files).
I then recorded and copied onto the external 1TB drive with the newer Humax HDR-1800T 500GB, no problems.

Now the newer Humax HDR-1800T 500GB has died (probably), I have dug out my original Humax HDR-1800T 320GB. It can play ALL the files on the external 1TB USB disk, no problems.

As I like to have backups for files AND the hardware that can play them; I have been unsuccessfully looking to get another 1800T for a few months.
But I have now spotted a 2000T that looks promising, hence my original query as to compatibility.

From your original reply, and looking at how similar (identical!) the 1800T and 2000T back panels are, I am 95% sure that the 2000T will be as happy with the external drive as both my 1800Ts have been.

Yes, I think I'd be sure that a 2000T will play the files on the external drive.

For what it's worth, the actual video files on the external drive (those with filename ending .ts) should be playable on most Humaxes and PCs. The user experience will be different - no other Humaxes, other than the previous HD/HDR-Fox-T2 (maybe) and 1800T/2000T will show time of recording and synopsis.
