Heads up: Handbrake now supports QSV

For those who sometimes need a simple transcoder, Handbrake has always been a good choice. If you don't know it, it will transcode just about any media file to .mp4 or .mkv.

The best news is that the latest version fully supports Intel Quick Sync Video. If you've got a Core processor or a recent Pentium/Celeron, QSV cuts encoding time by >50% and frees up the processor to get on with other work while the hardware does the encoding. Go into the Video tab. If QSV is shown as an available encoder, your processor supports it.

For the first time I'm finding it a practical proposition to set a batch of recodes going and then just carry on working on the PC.
