Humax Foxsat - Custom firmware advantages

I have a Humax Foxsat HDR. New to the world of freesat. Sorry.... I have a few questions 1) What advantages of installing custom firmware? 2) Will the custom firware allow me to access my LaCie nas server? 3) can I play avi movie files? using firware? 4) Can I install software such as xbmc on humax? Thanks
